The complex challenges facing society today demand new ways of working that bring together expertise from across disciplines, sectors and communities. Imperial's School of Convergence Science was established to harness the university's world-leading research and collaborative culture, creating deeply integrated research communities focused on tackling the problems that matter most.

As a key part of our Science for Humanity strategy, the School brings together researchers, partners and innovators to accelerate discovery, unlock new opportunities for collaboration and funding, and translate research into real-world impact. Through its mission-led approach, it is driving progress across four themes of critical global importance: Health and Technology; Human and Artificial Intelligence; Space, Security and Telecoms; and Sustainability.

About the School

The School of Convergence Science builds on Imperial's core mission and extends the boundaries of the university's problem-solving capabilities by enabling the transdisciplinary production of unique combinations of knowledge.

Drawing on and adding value to Imperial's existing expertise in STEMB and embedded social sciences, the School creates novel transdisciplinary research, innovation and training programmes.

These programmes are informed by Imperial's core societal values, emergent scientific trends, and combined deep technical expertise, providing a space where the community is encouraged and supported to imagine new pathways to shape a more desirable future.

About the School

Sustainability

Imperial's Sustainability mission within the School of Convergence Science unites researchers, industry, policymakers and communities to tackle the interconnected challenges of climate, energy, nature and the built environment. Rather than treating sustainability as a constraint on growth, the mission is designed around a different premise: that human prosperity and planetary health can, and must, advance together. Through deeply integrated research and sustained partnership, we are building the evidence and the coalitions needed to turn that ambition into system-wide change.

Find out more about our work in Sustainability and how we are building the evidence, coalitions and capabilities to deliver a prosperous future in harmony with the planet.

Health and Technology

Global healthcare systems are under growing strain, with rising costs driven by ageing populations, expensive new technologies and fragmented models of care, challenges felt most acutely in low- and middle-income countries where existing health inequities continue to widen. Imperial's Health and Technology mission within the School of Convergence Science takes a bold, mission-driven approach, bringing together science, technology, governance and operational capability to enable real-world implementation at scale. Through this work, we are redefining how health research is done, who it serves, and what it can achieve, building a fairer, healthier and more resilient future for all.

Health and Technology is one of four mission-led themes within Imperial's School of Convergence Science. Find out more about our work in Health and Technology and how we are redefining how health research is done, who it serves, and what it can achieve.

Space, Security and Telecommunications

We live in a world of unprecedented scientific advancement, where communication is instantaneous and safety concerns extend into the digital sphere. Imperial's Space, Security and Telecoms mission within the School of Convergence Science exists at the frontier of this new world. Our vision is to protect, connect and know our worlds, setting the global agenda at the intersection of space, security and telecommunications, and delivering the academic leadership this moment demands.

Space, Security and Telecoms is one of four mission-led themes within Imperial's School of Convergence Science. Find out more about our work in Space, Security and Telecoms and how we are setting the global agenda to protect, connect and know our worlds.

Human and Artificial Intelligence

Human and artificial intelligence have traditionally been studied apart. Imperial's Human and Artificial Intelligence mission within the School of Convergence Science bridges the two, building a unified science of intelligence grounded in real people, contexts and workflows, so that humans and machines can learn and adapt together. This means exploring how intelligence is embodied in both humans and machines, and how it emerges from interactions among brains, bodies, systems and societal contexts. The vision is a paradigm in which human and artificial intelligence co-evolve, enabling adaptive and responsible AI that augments both human and machine potential, can act in the real world, and embeds ethics and governance from the start.
