Tackling climate change requires a detailed understanding of the climate system and the rapid scale-up of solutions to cut emissions across the economy and enable our society to effectively adapt to the impacts of a warming climate.
To this end, the Grantham Institute regularly engages with the policy community and a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the best available evidence on climate science and solutions can inform decisions on climate action.
We also work to enable a better understanding within the academic community of the emerging questions faced by decision-makers and practitioners.
Learn about our thematic priorities and activities in the section below.
The Grantham Institute also co-chairs the , which brings together members from the academic community to advance climate action.

Strengthening policy engagement across the UK climate research community
The UK Universities Climate Network (UUCN) is an expanding group of academics and professional staff from over 95 UK universities and research centres, co-ordinated by the Grantham Institute. Founded in 2019 in lead up to COP26, the network fosters collaboration across the UK academic sector to advance climate action nationally and internationally.
UUCN works with key stakeholders, including policymakers, to amplify and maximise the impact of climate change research expertise. The network is also a forum for joint projects, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among the UK climate research community.
Mobilising the academic community to advance global action on climate and nature
Imperial is an official observer of several international climate change and nature fora and supporting science bodies, including:
- United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC)
- Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
- United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
- Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
- Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
The Grantham Institute mobilises the university community around these initiatives, including Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and related activities. Imperial delegates are active observers – engaging with key global stakeholders to share evidence for ambitious action and advance critical knowledge on climate change and nature.
We regularly reach out to the Imperial community when opportunities to get involved in this work become available. Find out about our activities at COP29 and COP30.
