Hypersonic Aerodynamics: Effect of roughness on transition

Boundary layer transition is a critical factor in the design of hypersonic vehicles. It is strongly affected by surface roughness, which is often modelled as either discrete areas or individual isolated elements. This work aims to bridge the gap between these two modelling approaches, through a study of the flow around pairs of closely spaced isolated elements using experimental and numerical tools.

Engineering self-healing composite materials with synthetic

Biological materials form the natural environment we see around us and are typically capable of self-assembly, self-healing and multifunctionality. This project is investigating living co-cultures of engineered cells which together ‘grow’ more sophisticated composite biomaterials than is achieved with a single cell type.
