The Charmian Brinson Honorary Lecture is an annual, free lecture where the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) welcomes an external speaker to discuss a relevant topic of their choice. This year, science writer-author-broadcaster Georgina Ferry will deliver her talk entitled:
From jack-of-all-trades to multi-hyphenate: channel-switching in science communication
Our Charmian Brinson Honorary Guest Lecturers have one thing in common: they have not followed advice to 鈥榮tay in your lane鈥, but have developed a range of skills that have enabled them to share their expertise with wide audiences. In her 2024 annual lecture, science writer-author-broadcaster Georgina Ferry will reflect on her 45 years in science communication to discuss what it means to be a 鈥榤ulti-hyphenate鈥 in the field today.
Georgina Ferry Bio
After graduating in Experimental Psychology, Georgina Ferry learned her trade as a staff editor and feature writer on New Scientist聽and presenting science programmes on BBC Radio.
Georgina is known for her definitive biography of Britain鈥檚 only female Nobel prizewinning scientist, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin. Described as 鈥渢he science book of the year鈥 by John Gribbin (The Independent) and shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize and the Marsh Biography Award,聽 a revised and updated Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin: Patterns, Proteins and Peace, was released by Bloomsbury in 2019. As her foremost biographer, Georgina is often called upon to deliver talks about Hodgkin and contributes to panel debates, podcasts and even plays about the Nobel prizewinner.
Georgina has published several further books on 20th and 21st-century science, as well as making detours into public relations and oral history. She is a regular contributor of reviews, obituaries and features to publications including The Guardian, Nature and The Lancet. Georgina has held a number of prominent roles contributing to science communication, education and outreach.
