Biography
Eduard Verhagen is a paediatrician at the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). Prior to his work in Groningen, he spent five years practising in Curaçao (Caribbean). At Groningen, he served as Clinical Director of the Beatrix Children’s Hospital/UMCG. He is currently Professor of Paediatrics and Paediatric Palliative Care, Head of Department, and Chair of the Women & Children’s Division.
He studied both Law and Medicine at Utrecht University and completed his paediatric training in Amsterdam. His doctoral research at the University of Groningen focused on end-of-life decision-making for newborns in Dutch neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Verhagen has published extensively on ethical decision-making and end-of-life care. He was one of the authors of the “Groningen Protocol” on the termination of life in newborns. In addition, he leads several national research and palliative care initiatives and serves as a member and chair of various medical, ethical, and legal advisory boards at national and governmental levels.
