Project aims

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic disease in the UK, affecting about 18,000 people. The health impacts of SCD are driven in large part by inflammation. Complications often include significant impact to the lungs in both children and adults. Evidence of both the short-term and long-term health impact of air pollution on respiratory complications in SCD is currently lacking in the UK. The aim of this project is to address this evidence gap by conducting an analysis of hospital admission data, combined with high resolution ambient air quality modelled surfaces for common air pollutants. A better understanding of the impact of air quality on SCD could guide policies to prevent complications.
