The Environmental Research Group (ERG) is committed to co鈥憄roducing research with communities most affected by air pollution, particularly racialised and economically disadvantaged groups who face disproportionate health burdens. To deepen this work, ERG has partnered with Impact on Urban Health (IoUH) through its ten鈥憏ear “Health Effects of Air Pollution” programme, which focuses on place鈥慴ased collaboration to tackle the root causes of health inequalities and inform policy change. Together, the ERG and IoUH combine rigorous science with community insight to design equitable solutions, generate policy鈥憆eady evidence, and support practical action for cleaner, healthier neighbourhoods.

Highlights of the partnership

  • Introduction to Air Quality programme (originated via a workshop for IoUH’s HEAP team): now delivered to 250+ community leaders, NGO staff, residents, policymakers and health professionals, building capability to act on air pollution.
  • Air quality and emissions in construction (with ERG’s Centre for Low Emission Construction): research on industry attitudes, information pathways and actionable recommendations to cut site emissions.
  • Awair project: co鈥慸esigned outdoor air鈥憅uality displays raising awareness at street level; now deployed across three London boroughs.
  • Urban Health Observatory (Lambeth & Southwark): proposed mechanisms to quantify programme impact across environmental and wider health determinants.
  • MOBILEAir pilot: precursor to a randomised trial assessing whether tailored exposure鈥憆eduction advice can improve birth outcomes among racialised and economically disadvantaged communities.

What’s next?

The next phase will scale successful approaches, extend co鈥慸esigned interventions, and strengthen evaluation to inform local and national policy and expand work on indoor air pollution, linking household exposures, behaviours and building characteristics to practical actions for safer homes.  Together, the ERG and IoUH will keep collaborating with communities, local authorities and industry to deliver measurable improvements in air quality and health.
