Kick-start your collaborative early-stage research with financial support from two leading institutions.

The Institute of Science Tokyo-Imperial Research Collaboration Fund was established to enable the pursuit of early-stage research that would not have been otherwise possible. It encourages collaboration between academics, researchers and 天美传媒 from the two institutions by providing grants that support exploratory research activities.

These could include:

  • Small-scale experiments or the development of prototypes;
  • Travel costs;
  • Hackathons or other collaborative events;
  • Visits for academics, research staff and 天美传媒 to investigate the potential for a project, analyse results or learn new techniques;
  • Networking events or the establishment of new networks that promote the exchange of ideas, best practice and other research goals;
  • Facilitation fees for online workshops;
  • Payment for student assistance to encourage their engagement in projects;
  • Research consumables/datasets.

For the 26/27 academic year, the Fund has committed to awarding up to ten successful teams. Though the programme is open to proposals from all academic fields, there is particular interest in projects that align with Science Tokyo's and Imperial's School of Convergence Science.

Budget requests should be no more than £5,000 from Imperial and ¥1,000,000 from Science Tokyo per project for a project duration of one year.

How to apply

Joint Science Tokyo and Imperial teams must be led by one 'Principal Applicant' who submits one proposal on behalf of their team.

Each application must be submitted using the Imperial-IST_Collaboration_Fund_Guidance_FINAL_2627 [.docx] form in English, as a single PDF file. They must include a written case for support (of up to two pages) and a financial summary.

Researchers from other institutions may also participate as co-investigators and at their own expense.

Applications must be submitted via one email addressed to both Imperial (globalseedfunds@imperial.ac.uk) and Science Tokyo (sciencetokyo.global@adm.isct.ac.jp) before Friday 31 July.
