Dig deeper, look closer, think bigger
Black History Month in the UK dates back to 1987, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Carribean. We owe the event to Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a Ghanain refugee living in Britain at the time, who wanted to challenge racism and celebrate the history of Black people. He chose October, as opposed to February (Black History Month in the United States), because he felt the event should take place at a time where children were refreshed from their summer holiday, less preoccupied by exams and consequently more open to learning and engaging with the topic.
More than 30 years later, Black History Month continues to be an important time for celebration, education and recognition, with events happening across the country. Head to the official webpage to find out what’s taking place in London.
