The inaugural Year 13 cohort at the Imperial Maths School has received their first set of A-level results, with great success.

The , a specialist, state-funded sixth-form school formed in partnership between Imperial and the Frontier Learning Trust, provides a unique and intimate learning environment for capable young ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ who all study Maths and Further Maths at A-level, along with either Physics or Chemistry, or both.

Students at the school also have the option to study a fourth A-level subject from a broader curriculum offering at the partner school, Woodhouse College, on whose estate the school is located in Finchley, North London. 

Hard work, impressive outcomes

The 43 Year 13 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ in the inaugural cohort have now received the school’s first ever set of A-level results.

Across the cohort, 93.5% of grades were achieved at A* or A, .

These are a reflection of the effort, commitment and enthusiasm they have shown to their subjects. It takes courage to come to brand new school, but our ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ have embraced it and contributed to the school in a way that will be felt by all future Imperial Maths School ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½.  

"I would also like to pass on thanks to the staff of the school for the invaluable contributions they have made to starting a brand-new school and for the support they have provided to enable the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ to achieve such impressive results.” 

, Associate Provost (Societal Engagement), and the academic lead in setting up the school, said: “These results are testament to the incredibly hard work put in by both the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ and staff at the Imperial Maths School. Choosing to attend a new school, a fantastic specialist learning environment, takes bravery and courage. It’s clear that the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ have thrived and we are thrilled to see such impressive results from the school’s first graduating cohort. We are excited to follow their next steps into higher education.”

Diverse destinations

All 43 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ will be continuing on their educational pathway and moving onto undergraduate study, with 37 of the cohort securing a place at their first choice university. 

Five ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ have secured a place to study at Imperial, with five more securing places at Oxford or Cambridge.  

While other UK universities are among the destinations of the school’s first graduates, a small number of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ will be continuing their educational journey with exciting opportunities overseas, including Nagoya University in Japan and L’Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, France. 

David Lee is confident that every single student has a promising future ahead of them. “I'm very excited to see what happens next for our first cohort as they pursue different pathways across the world in a range of mathematical sciences.”

Professor Dallman added: “We look forward in particular to welcoming those ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ who have received an offer and secured a place here at Imperial, and who will remain part of the Imperial community during their undergraduate study.”

Having officially opened the school in September of 2023, Imperial Provost, Professor Ian Walmsley, was delighted with the school’s results and offered his congratulations to the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ and team of staff: “ These strong results are a testament to the great work of our colleagues and ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ at Imperial Maths School. The staff nurture talented young people, motivate and inspire them, and help them imagine futures they might never have thought possible. 

“On my visits to the School, I’ve seen first-hand the excitement, commitment, and mutual encouragement that spark the community. This is a place where bright minds, often from backgrounds still under-represented in higher education, are given the tools to flourish. 

“With GCSE results just around the corner, there’s a real sense of excitement for what lies ahead. For any young person with a passion for maths and the sciences, and for the families and teachers who support them, the opportunities here are extraordinary.  

“Together, the Maths School and Imperial are shaping a sixth form experience that’s about more than grades, it’s about equipping the next generation to change the world for the better."
