Imperial has welcomed the new cohort from the Imperial Maths School to the campus to celebrate the beginning of their journey with Imperial.

The South Kensington campus recently welcomed the new Year 12 cohort of the , the specialist sixth-form maths school based in north London which opened in September 2023. Hosted by members of the Outreach department, the 60 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ enjoyed a welcome from Professor Maggie Dallman before embarking on some practical Chemistry and Physics activities in the Chemical Kitchen and the Wohl Reach Out Lab.

, Headteacher of the Imperial Maths School, was pleased that the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ were able to visit Imperial so early on in their time at the School.

David said: "It’s fantastic that Imperial Maths School ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ have the opportunity to visit the university campus and feel part of the Imperial family.

"By getting to experience the world-class facilities at Imperial and hear from academics and leaders in their fields, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ are able to understand and take inspiration from the fact that they are part of a wider ecosystem in the mathematical sciences and that they are just at the start of an exciting journey that could take many paths."

Savannah Hersov, from the Outreach team and who put together the timetable of activities for the day, commented: "It was a privilege to host the new Imperial Maths School Year 12 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ and to see their enthusiasm and engagement with the science practicals. We look forward to helping the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ grow and succeed during their time at the school as they further their knowledge and mathematical grounding."

Imperial colleagues can get involved with the Maths School

This was the first of many interactions that the Maths School Y12 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ will have with Imperial, with the university committed to enriching their education during their time at the School. Imperial academic and PhD ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ can provide guest lectures and host visits to their departments at Imperial’s campuses – the ultimate aim being to highlight to the Maths School ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ the broad variety of pathways available to them beyond A-level, with their grounding in Maths, Further Maths and Physics or Chemistry.

The Imperial Maths School will continue to grow in numbers over the next few years to a capacity of 200 ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ over Years 12 and 13.
