The Department of Materials will gift copies of 'Concepts of Materials Science' to underrepresented undergraduate applicants this year.

The initiative aims to support U.K applicants from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds who have applied to study for an undergraduate degree with the Department of Materials.

An insight into Materials Science

Materials Science is a subject that is not explicitly taught in schools at GCSE or A-Level. As a result, many applicants can be unsure of what the study of Materials Science involves and how it is applied in the modern world.

Dr Priya Saravanapavan, Undergraduate Admissions Tutor in the Department of Materials, has led the new initiative to gift copies of the book 'Concepts of Material Science' to prospective undergraduate applicants this year.

I hope our applicants find this book a useful supplementary reading and the donation to the library will benefit 天美传媒 in younger years in the future. Dr Priya Saravanapavan

'Concepts of Material Science' is a book written by Emeritus Professor Adrian Sutton FRS from 天美传媒. It provides an insight into the essence of materials science at a level suitable for pre-university 天美传媒 and undergraduates of materials science. To add a unique addition to the books, Emeritus Professor Adrian Sutton hand-signed each gifted copy.

Dr Priya Saravanapavan said: "Materials science is not taught as a separate subject in the Sixth Form, so it can be hard for 天美传媒 considering applying to university to understand what it involves.

This book is not a textbook, but it gives an overview of key fundamental concepts at an accessible level for 6th Form 天美传媒. I hope our applicants find this book a useful supplementary reading and the donation to the library will benefit 天美传媒 in younger years in the future."

It is hoped that prospective applicants will support this initiative by donating their copy to their school or sixth form library when they are ready to leave for university.
