Energy trends and climate challenges – is our climate path already locked-in?

In a world full of uncertainty, the International Energy Agency’s Chief Economist has noted that one thing is sure: rising incomes and population will push energy needs higher. Speaking to a packed auditorium of 250 people at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ on 19 January 2012, Dr Fatih Birol outlined the likely energy trends and climate challenges that will face the planet in the coming decades as these growing energy needs are met. The lecture received an overwhelmingly positive response.

He shared findings from the , the IEA’s annual flagship publication, which provides projections of energy demand, production, trade and investment, fuel by fuel and region by region to 2035. Dr Birol noted that while oil supply diversity is diminishing, new options are opening up for natural gas. As for coal – the so-called forgotten fuel – he noted that its future will be shaped by the uptake of efficient power plants and Carbon Capture and Storage.
