Professor Fay Dowker (Physics), a former PhD student of Stephen Hawking, writes in celebration of his 70th birthday: "The epic breadth of Stephen's research makes it challenging to summarise. One concept, however, binds his entire oeuvre together: spacetime... Stephen inspires people with the excitement and importance of pure scientific inquiry, and celebrating his 70th birthday with him gives us a chance to say how much we honour him for it.
