Overview
This course will be delivered in a hybrid format. This includes pre-recorded materials, live online sessions, and you can also attend in person teaching or choose to follow this online.
In this course led by Prof Stephen Durham and Dr Guy Scadding you will learn and gain an advanced understanding of the importance of upper airway diseases in the allergy clinic, respiratory clinics and primary care. You will learn to differentiate between rhinitis and rhinosinusitis, understanding their pathophysiology and managing them accordingly. You will explore the mechanisms and clinical use of allergen immunotherapy, enabling you to identify appropriate patients and initiate treatment/refer accordingly.
A range of Imperial and international expert speakers will cover an exciting programme of pre-recorded materials and live interactive sessions.
This course forms part of a range of short courses in Allergy which are available both to 天美传媒 who are enrolled on the MSc in allergy programme, and as stand-alone CPD programmes for GPs, specialist trainees and consultants, nurses, dietitians and other healthcare professionals wishing to improve their ability to manage allergic patients in daily practice. The course is also relevant for basic scientists and professionals working in industry in the field of rhinology, asthma and allergy.
By the end of the course you will be better able to:
- Critically appraise up to date research regarding the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis, their main differentials, new disease biomarkers and therapeutic strategies.
- Take an advanced clinical history in children and adults with suspected rhinitis and/or rhinosinusitis.
- Propose a differential diagnosis and diagnostic work-up based on the clinical history in children and adults with suspected rhinitis and/or rhinosinusitis.
- Integrate the findings of the clinical history and diagnostic tests to formulate a proposed diagnosis in children and adults with suspected rhinitis and/or rhinosinusitis.
- Formulate an optimal management plan in children and adults with suspected rhinitis and/or rhinosinusitis.
- Assess the benefits and risks of allergen-specific immunotherapy for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in children and adults in clinical practice.
- Assess the benefits and risks of allergen-specific immunotherapy for the treatment of Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity.
- Evaluate the resources required to safely administer allergen immunotherapy and biologic therapy in practice.

Professor Stephen Durham
Stephen R Durham is Head of Section for Allergy and Clinical Immunology at NHLI, Imperial College and Professor of Allergy and Respiratory Medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital London.
Professor Durham qualified from Downing College Cambridge and Guy's Hospital London in 1976. He trained in general and respiratory medicine at Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge, Royal Brompton Hospital and John Radcliffe/Churchill Hospitals in Oxford, returning to NHLI as Senior lecturer in 1988. Before taking up his present position in 2004, he was Reader in Upper Respiratory Medicine.
He has studied basic mechanisms of allergic rhinitis and asthma and the influence of treatment. This has involved the development of pharmacodynamic models of allergen challenge in the skin, nose and lung and studies of seasonal hayfever. A particular focus has been translational studies of allergen immunotherapy that have elucidated mechanisms of human antigen-specific tolerance and informed novel treatment approaches. He is principle investigator for a number of international trials that have resulted in Europe-wide registration of an Alum-based grass pollen vaccine for injection and a sublingual grass allergen tablet, the first allergy vaccine to be registered in UK for 35 years.
Professor Durham is current President of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and a member of the Immune Tolerance Network Steering Committee of the National Institutes of health. He is former Chair of the Research Committee of the World Allergy Organisation and council member of Collegium Internationale Allergologicum. He has given prestigious lectures including the Dr John Salvaggio and Dr Harold Nelson Lectureships at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the John P McGovern Medal from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. From the BSACI has been awarded the Jack Pepys Lectureship and William Frankland Medal for outstanding services to clinical allergy. He has written over 350 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and edited 3 books, including the popular BMJ ABC of Allergies.
Guy Scadding is a consultant allergist at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, where he is clinical lead. He sees a typical caseload of allergic and non-allergic presentations in general adult allergy clinics, as well as supervising food and drug challenges and allergen immunotherapy clinics. He does a weekly joint medical-surgical rhinology clinic with ENT colleagues, seeing a range of rhinitis and rhinosinusitis cases. He completed a PhD on allergen immunotherapy and contributes to his team's research in this area.
