Overview
This short course will introduce you to key concepts in child population health and the application of theory and principles in the NHS and globally.
It will cover the following areas: Child health in the UK and Europe, measures of health and disease, current important child health problems affecting our children, child health in developing countries - the majority world and why international child health is important.
Learning journey
Global burden of childhood disease, to include infectious disease, AIDS and HIV, violence, reproductive health, tropical diseases and disability will also be studied. Children's rights and their relevance to child public health, determinants of child health and historical aspects of child public health in the UK will be investigated.
Other aspects will include: techniques and resources for child public health practice, concepts and definitions in public health and health promotion practice, social paediatrics - definitions and scope and vulnerable children and their needs. It will also build on earlier teaching on "disease causation", epidemiological study design and lifecourse epidemiology approaches in the science and evidence base module.
Case studies in child public health and social paediatrics (including obesity prevention, promotion of immunisation, promotion of emotional health, injury prevention approaches service design for looked after children, recognition of domestic violence, and mitigating the health consequences of poverty and disadvantage will be the mainstay of this course.
The course consists of several synchronous sessions on a video-conferencing platform which participants will be expected to attend on the following dates (UK times):

Course details
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Construct a determinants framework of child health which can be used both in clinical practice and epidemiological research
- Appraise the value of Children’ Rights and give examples of their use in advocacy and service provision
- Compare and contrast diagnoses in clinical and child public health practice and formulate plans in relation to different social paediatric case scenarios
- Critically Evaluate the application of child public health techniques in one chosen topic area e.g. breast feeding promotion, child mental health, or immunisation and propose a strategy for health promotion.
This fully online course is run over 5 consecutive weeks and you are expected to conduct 7 - 10 hours per week of guided and self-directed asynchronous learning, which also incorporates group work online. There are also planned synchronous sessions during the course to discuss ideas, present group and individual work and to facilitate further learning.
The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) hosts guidance and support with resources and tasks that you can study at your own pace within the suggested parameters. The VLE supports your academic journey and helps you to connect with other 天美传媒 for networking, community building and active co-construction of your learning.
Evidence of sufficient participation will be required to obtain a course certificate.
This course will benefit paediatricians, GPs, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in Child Health.
As the course is a multi-professional programme, 天美传媒 will develop an understanding of how their own individual behaviours, and those of the teams within which they work, can have a significant influence on the quality of care delivered.

Detailed joining instructions will be sent to all participants 10-14 days prior to the commencement of the course. Places on these courses are limited, EARLY BOOKING IS ADVISED.
A 20% administration fee will be levied for cancellations made up to two weeks prior to the start of the course. Cancellations thereafter will be liable to the loss of the full fee. Notice of cancellation must be given in writing by letter or fax and action will be taken to recover, from the delegates or their employers, that proportion of the fee owing at the time of cancellation.

It will endeavour to provide participants with as much notice as possible, but will not accept liability for costs incurred by participants or their organisations for the cancellation of travel arrangements and/or accommodation reservations as a result of the course being cancelled or postponed. If a course is cancelled, fees will be refunded in full. Imperial College also reserves the right to postpone or make such alterations to the content of a course as may be necessary.

Dr Dougal Hargreaves is a Houston Reader in Paediatrics and Population Health at Imperial College School of Public Health and a Research Fellow at the UCL Institute of Child Health.
