This practical course is for learners who have completed a beginners’ acoustic guitar course, or who already know a few basic chords and want to play with more fluency, confidence and musical style.

You will develop your chord changes, strumming, picking, rhythm and timing while exploring a range of popular acoustic guitar styles, including folk, pop, blues and simple rock. As the course progresses, you will also be introduced to accessible ways of creating your own guitar parts, including simple riffs, blues phrases and first steps in improvisation.

The emphasis will be on practical playing rather than theory for its own sake. You will work with songs, chord progressions, backing tracks and group exercises, helping you become a more confident and expressive guitarist in a relaxed evening class setting.

This course is suitable if you can already play some basic open chords, such as G, C, D, Em and Am, and can move between them, even if slowly. It is not suitable for complete beginners.

We strongly advise you to practice regularly outside of the classroom, even if only for 15 or 20 minutes a day (more if you can!) as this will improve your playing very rapidly.

Special equipment needed

You will need an acoustic guitar for the sessions. Advice on purchasing a suitable instrument will be given on request. We also advise you to have short nails to play properly.
