The merits of a robust low-order pole-placement method of damping-control design over a conventional root-locus method are discussed: both being aimed at providing adequate damping against interarea oscillations. The design is based on a weighted and normalised eigenvalue-distance-minimisation method (WNEDM) to obtain damping controllers employing Superconducting magnetic-energy-storage (SMES) devices in a study system. The WNEDM-based control guarantees adequate damping in the prefault and postfault cases. The damping performance of the controllers is compared with that obtained by the root-locus technique. The results show that the WNEDM-based control is preferred over root-locus-based control when the control efforts in each the same.

An H-infinity-mixed-sensitivity design of a damping device employing a unified-power-flow controller (UPFC) is presented. The problem is posed in the linear-matrix-inequality (LMI) framework. The controller design is aimed at providing adequate damping to interarea oscillations over a range of operating conditions. The results obtained in a two-area four-machine test system are seen to be very satisfactory both in the frequency domain and through nonlinear simulations.

Switching supervisory control (SSC) algorithms was developed for nonlinear plants with uncertain parameters and subjected to unaccessible persistent disturbances of known maximum size. The algorithm provided that full state feedback was available and can be tailored for linear plant dynamics. A simulative example was presented which showed that the algorithm was capable to cope with slowly time-varying and piecewise constant parameters.

This paper deals with several notions of incremental stability. In other words, the focus is on stability of trajectories with respect to one another, rather than with respect to some attractor. The aim is to present a framework for understanding such questions fully compatible with the well-known input-to-state stability (ISS) approach. Applications of the newly introduced stability notions are also discussed.

This paper presents a thorough investigation of 3D calculation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution in a realistic model of the human head exposed to electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones. The calculation was made using the FDTD. The source was modeled with a power of 600 mW, as a monopole fed with a current of 300 mA, and variable frequency in the range of 800 MHz to 1.8 GHz. The human head model has a precision of 1.11 mm x 1.86 mm x 1.11 mm in the x, y and z directions, respectively; and is composed of 12 different tissues: air, bone, ERL, brain, skin, muscle, fat and eye (composed of cornea, anterior chamber, lens, vitreous body and sclera). This very fine model allows accurate SAR calculation in different tissues which may have been overlooked in other models.

In this paper, a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model of the Furuta pendulum is derived. Based on this model, a balancing controller is designed using robust predictive control techniques. Invariant set theory is used to accurately characterise the region of the state space in which the balancing controller is effective. An energy-based control law is used to swing up the pendulum. Invariant sets calculated for the balancing controller can be exploited to systematically determine the switching condition between swing up and balancing controllers. In practice, the pendulum may be swung towards the upright position with varying speed and the speed of the rotating arm may also vary. Based on this physical insight, the speed of the rotating arm is chosen as gain scheduling variable. It is shown that this strategy is effective in achieving a more consistent swing up and balancing behaviour which is not sensitive to the performance of the swing up controller.
