Course overview

Join Dr David McKinstry each week to discover the story of modern architecture and how it came to shape the world around us.

This course traces the development of modern architecture from the late nineteenth century to the present day, exploring how industrialisation, new technologies, political change, and evolving cultural attitudes gave rise to a bold new language of building.

Beginning with architectural responses to the Industrial Revolution, we move through key movements including Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, the Bauhaus, and the International Style. Along the way, we examine the work and ideas of influential figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Adolf Loos, and Le Corbusier, considering how their approaches continue to shape architecture today.

We also explore some of the most recognisable and at times controversial styles of the modern era, including Art Deco, Brutalism, and Postmodernism, reflecting on their cultural impact and enduring legacy.
