My favourite facilities at Imperial

Imperial Business School's campus in South Kensington is a vibrant blend of modern architecture and historic charm which has made it an inspiring place for my education so far. There are so many resources and facilities available to make the most of your time studying here.

The library has been a great place to go after classes to finish up some readings, work on papers, and even catch up on lectures. Various floors serve distinct purposes in the building. The first floor is great for collaboration, featuring large round tables with ample seating for group work. Meanwhile, other floors are designated as either silent or quiet zones, providing a relaxed environment for focused work when needed.

The modern classrooms at the Business School have been another standout feature during my studies. Each seat is equipped with a power outlet, and the lectures are recorded, allowing me to review any material I might have missed.

Campus life at Imperial Business School

Studying on campus has become one of my favourite things to do since moving. Situated in the heart of South Kensington, the Business School is a short distance from Hyde Park, surrounded by diverse food options, and conveniently located near High Street Kensington for enjoyable in-between class shopping.

The campus is always buzzing with energy, encouraging collaboration and innovation. It is nice to see a diverse student body and faculty bringing lots of different perspectives. There are always engaging workshops, networking events, and alumni talks that you can attend, complementing the academic programme.

Must visit London locations

London is so rich in history and culture and there is always more to explore and discover. Of course, we have iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge, along with incredible museums such as the Victoria & Albert, Science, and Natural History - all just steps away from the Business School. Beyond that, there are vibrant areas like Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Soho and Borough Market which are must-visit areas for food enthusiasts who are looking to get a taste of London’s culinary scene.

Soho has been my favourite due to its vibrant cultural mix, and plethora of restaurants, bars, and cafes to explore and indulge in. I have so many memories in this area, from trying new foods, to discovering hidden gems, and enjoying live performances at the iconic West End theatres. Soho caters to many tastes and interests, and it encapsulates the spirit of London.

My experience studying in London

Studying in London is a very unique and enriching experience that goes beyond just academics. The city's diversity broadens your perspective and fosters a global mindset. Meeting people from all over the world, you learn so much personally which complements your academics.

We are also in a city that is one of the largest and most impactful in the world. There are world-renowned businesses, financial institutions, and entrepreneurs throughout the city creating an unparalleled networking opportunity. The city’s cultural diversity is also mirrored in its neighbourhoods as each offers a different flavour, atmosphere, and experience.

I truly believe studying in London ensures ��ý not only gain a top-tier education but immerse themselves in a hub of innovation, culture, and business that makes the experience an unforgettable journey of growth and discovery.

But I will say, you get what you put in. Studying in London is only as good as you are willing to make it. So don’t be afraid to reach out to people, make friends, explore new places, try new things, and be the one to message first!

Napoleon Hill once said that the most important turning-points of life often come at the most unexpected times and in the most unexpected ways. Getting an offer from Imperial Business School has made my belief in this saying even stronger.

Ever since I started my Bachelor's (Hons.) in Economics at Delhi University, India, I was planning to pursue a degree in Economics for my master’s abroad. However, I needed to consider how this would align with my career goal of entering the corporate domain as a consultant. Personally, I did not wish to take up a job right after my graduation, this is why I was looking at international student experience in Applied Economics to gain the right set of skills and potential for graduate and apprenticeship roles in Economic Consulting.

Why I chose Imperial Business School

Imperial Business School offers the MSc Economics & Strategy for Business programme as part of its Management Masters’ suite. It is a unique and enriching blend of the core concepts of Applied Economics as well as Corporate and Digital Strategy. After receiving offers from around the world for a master’s in Economics and Business Analytics, it was a tough call for me to choose amongst some of the best universities in the world. However, let me start by talking about why the UK was my first preference as a student.

The benefits of studying in the UK and London

Firstly, universities in the UK have a reputation for intensive and high-quality learning which has been my topmost priority since the beginning of my professional education. Secondly, it is one of the safest and highly ranked spots for student safety and cultural diversity. Regardless of where you come from, you will feel at home in the UK.

What I’ve individually received in the form of personal and professional networking from Imperial Business School has been beyond my expectations. I call myself fortunate enough to be studying in one of the best cities in the world. London is a city that has something for everybody. It also provides countless work opportunities and networking events for ��ý looking for financial sustenance. This was another very crucial consideration for my choice to move to London once I had all my offers in hand.

Studying a Management Master's at Imperial Business School

The Management Masters’ programmes at Imperial Business School are amalgamations of both soft and hard skills. MSc Economics & Strategy for Business, in particular, as stated earlier, not only provides ��ý with a deep-rooted understanding of economic policy and implementation but also spurs an understanding of economic strategy and decision-making at the corporate level.

It is an enriching experience for ��ý from all domains as the concepts are picked up from ground zero. It facilitates careers in both public and private sectors which gives ��ý an opportunity to build a diverse portfolio and make a choice according to their personal preference. This inherent feature of the course is what drives undergrads and experienced professionals from around the world to pursue this as a Management Master’s degree.

An active careers service

In addition to this, the careers service at the Business School is active and versatile in providing ��ý with information about companies from a multitude of domains. It does a great job in channelling knowledge and professional guidance through company events, social meetups and alumni networks that are excellent opportunities for active job seekers and young graduates like myself to network and get to know more about company cultures and corporate values.

Students are also advised to take up one on one sessions with careers counsellors to enhance the effectiveness of their resumes and cover letters. This not only paves the way for stronger job applications but also helps ��ý build a sturdier mindset in terms of where their interests lie. What better a blend of academic learning and career guidance could one ask for?

Professor Nelson Phillips, Acting Dean of Imperial Business School, argues London’s reputation as a global centre for research and learning will continue to attract the most talented ��ý and academics.

Students must “think and act internationally” to succeed in their careers and personal life. These were the words of advice given by Imperial London’s President, Alice P Gast to the latest graduates at last October’s Commemoration Day. Whether these graduates go on to forge careers in London or elsewhere, the need to adopt a global perspective has never been more important for anyone who wants to succeed in the interconnected worlds of business and innovation.

‘Globalisation’ has long been one of the hallmarks of business schools around the world. Following Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, it’s not surprising schools have been keen to reassure existing and potential ��ý and academics of the creative, entrepreneurial and academic excellence they bring to the higher education community.

Indeed, President Gast has stressed how political changes will not hold Imperial back from delivering excellence in research and education for the benefit of global society.

Seeking global talent

We don’t yet know what the outcome will be for higher education in a post-Brexit Britain. But institutions such as Imperial are well positioned to thrive as London continues to seek out global talent to contribute to its thriving ‘powerhouse’ of entrepreneurship and innovation.

London’s dynamic startup scene is the biggest in Europe and continues to grow, making the capital one of the most innovative cities in the world. The capital’s burgeoning technology scene is rapidly producing companies with extraordinary growth potential. This makes London an attractive option for ��ý seeking careers in areas such as fintech, either with small to medium sized enterprises or multinational companies.

Choosing to study in another country has always been a risky decision for international ��ý, even before last summer’s EU referendum vote. For business ��ý, the high cost of an MBA degree, which often involves giving up a career for a year of studying, is a calculated risk.

I believe the ��ý London-based schools seek to attract, the natural risk-takers, will continue to take a gamble on London and take advantage of the excellent educational experiences available, as well as the wealth of links between London-based schools and industry in the capital.

London is now flourishing in a number of traditional and new markets, from finance to big data, healthcare and even climate change. Companies such as Accenture, Deloitte and McKinsey have long reached out to Imperial for outstanding business graduates and will still do so as long as London, in Mayor Sadiq Khan’s pledge, remains “open for business” and continues to seek out the best talent from around the world.

London-based firms will always want the people who are the best fit for their business, which means employment prospects for new graduates shouldn’t change, certainly not in the short term.

A new visa pilot scheme that allows ��ý studying on the Business School’s one-year Master’s programmes to stay in London for up to six months after graduation will be another incentive for international ��ý outside the EU to study in London.

Capitalising on the Trump effect

But does anything change, now Donald Trump has become President of the United States ? What will this mean for London-based business schools trying to attract the best talent from around the world, in light of his pledges to ban people from certain countries and religious backgrounds from entering the US?

Trump’s presidency has created real uncertainty for ��ý and academics who would ordinarily have looked to US business schools for their next career move. However, the current climate represents a huge opportunity for UK business schools to show our international values by welcoming more ��ý from Trump’s black-listed countries, as well as other Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

In the past, the Gulf countries have sent many thousands of ��ý to the US and as a result they have extensive ties with major US business schools. But ��ý from the Gulf may now be deterred from studying in the US by some of Mr Trump’s controversial pledges, such as a plan to create a register of Muslims. These ��ý will want to go abroad and study in English, creating an opportunity for UK business schools.

Offering greater value for money

At the same time, US citizens have long been attracted to studying in London and the current drop in the pound has just made this even more attractive. This means international ��ý can now obtain an MBA degree from a prestigious business school for a much lower price in the UK.

But will ��ý be put off from coming to London following Theresa May’s pledge to take Britain out of the single market? And what about the threats from multinationals to withdraw their offices from London if this happens?

I believe big corporates and companies with an international outlook will continue to seek out the best graduates, whether they are based in London or elsewhere. Technology is making this even easier by increasing opportunities for employees to work remotely from wherever they are based in the world. This further breaks down barriers between countries, cultures and nationalities.

The spirit of partnership and bringing together great minds from across the world is what drives the world’s best universities and businesses. At Imperial, I see many examples of how ��ý are working together to create exciting new business ideas.

Take Phillip Jarman, an MBA student who collaborated with ��ý in Imperial to help create a customisable smartwatch that allows people to keep track of their health and lifestyle. The project raised over $1 million through crowdfunding and has attracted high-profile publicity.

The prospect of being part of a thriving, entrepreneurial community that contributes to the UK and global economy will make London-based schools like Imperial attractive places to work and study.

In a time of political uncertainty, it’s never been more important for us to embrace the contribution of the world’s best ��ý, academics and researchers in enabling London to flourish.

Where to live when studying at Imperial Business School? Helen Richardson Sun, 16/06/2019 - 14:02

As anyone who’s moved to London will no doubt tell you, the search for a place to live in this thriving capital is often a daunting task – with so many locations and options to choose from, especially for applicants joining the Business School from outside the UK, or even outside of London – where do you start?

To help with the search for accommodation, we’ve reached out to some current Imperial Business School student ambassadors to give some tips and advice on how they found their accommodation and what you can do to find the perfect place that meets your needs.

Elma at White City – MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management:

Elma opted for White City, North West London, for student accommodation through the GradPad service. This option is a good choice for anyone looking for a more student-orientated atmosphere, especially with spaces like the common room and an on-site gym. The site even includes a shuttle bus service that drops you at Imperial London.

White City also boasts great links to Central London (via London Underground’s Central Line) and is in close proximity to the Westfield shopping centre – perfect for picking up any last minute items needed for your study at the Business School. GradPad also offers two locations around London; the White City Wood Lane Studios, which Elma currently lives in, and also one based in Battersea at Grifton Studios

Renting at GradPad is approx. £250 per week (bills inclusive) for a Standard Studio and approx. £350 per week (bills inclusive) for a Premium Studio.

Simon at Stockwell – MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management:

Simon has chosen private accommodation in Stockwell, South London, which he found through Right Move. For those looking to keep down costs and explore areas further than the Business School, this a good option which gives a wider variety of accommodation.

Whilst being based south of the river, Stockwell is still only a 15 minute underground ride from the Business School and boasts great tube connections – the Northern and Victoria lines – both of which run 24 hours on Friday and Saturdays.

Renting at Simon’s flat is £800 per month including bills (£1,600 per month total, split with another flatmate).

Pinelopi at Hammersmith – MSc Business Analytics:

One of our ��ý, Pinelopi, opted for living in private halls based in Hammersmith, West London. Pinelopi found this by looking at websites for student accommodation in London and chose Hammersmith due to its proximity to the Business School and its family friendly atmosphere. The only downside is that the price of renting the private halls can be quite expensive.

The benefits to living in private halls is that all maintenance is handled by an on-site team. Despite the high price of rent, utilities that would otherwise be separate bills, are included making things less complex.

Renting at these halls is £1,000 per month (bills inclusive).

Tom In Bermondsey – MSc Economics and Strategy for Business:

For a cheaper option, Tom has opted to rent accommodation in Bermondsey, in South East London – which Tom found through word-of-mouth. Despite being further away from the Imperial campus, Bermondsey is only a short distance from all Central London has to offer, with the added benefit of being a quiet place to live.

Renting at Tim’s flat comes to around £660 per month (bills inclusive).

What else?

These three are just a small handful of the ways Business School ��ý have found their accommodation. Alongside this, Giovanni, one of our MSc Finance ��ý, used a real estate agency to find their flat, based at Earl’s Court. In contrast, Linfeng on our MSc Finance & Accounting programme, found their roommates through WeChat on Social Media.

Other ��ý have also used websites such as Spare Room – a popular website for Londoners and ��ý alike to find flat shares all over London or Open Rent – another great website to find rent properties, with the benefit of 0 Agency fees!

Top Tips:

As our ��ý have pointed out, there are lots of different factors. To make sure you find a good balance between what is important for you when deciding where to live make sure you consider:

Your budget – living closer often means paying more, can you afford this?
Distance – the opposite of the above, do you like to walk or are you happy taking public transport – using the Transport for London (TfL) Journey Planner might help this!
Amenities – is it close to the shops, a gym? Are these important for you?

Welcome to Imperial Business School and welcome to South Kensington – the cultural and intellectual hub of London. The origins of South Kensington as a centre for learning and culture date back to the Great Exhibition of 1851 which took place in nearby Hyde Park – the legacy of which has been commemorated in the naming of Exhibition Road. Wishing to bring education and culture to the masses, Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert set out his vision of South Kensington as a cultural Mecca filled with museums and institutions promoting art, music, science, culture and history. The area coined the name ‘Albertopolis’ in the 1850’s and while Albert died in 1861 before his vision was fully realised, the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens now watches over the area.

Home to the Natural History Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall, and of course Imperial London, the area remains a hive of cultural and intellectual activity over 150 years after its first conception.

Attractions:

Natural History Museum

Arguably the most famous and recognisable of the museums, the Natural History Museum draws around 5 million visitors per year. The famous Diplodocus ‘Dippy’ who was resident of the central entrance hall for almost 40 years has recently gone on tour around UK museums and has been replaced by a giant 25 metre long Blue Whale skeleton. Split into zones covering Earth, Volcanoes, Mammals, Dinosaurs, Birds, Human Biology, Minerals and Ecology to name but a few – it’s impossible to see everything in one visit but as entry is free you can keep coming back time and time again without spending a penny (unless you get enticed into one of the gift shops). Be sure to visit at Christmas when the famous Natural History Museum Ice Rink opens for some festive fun!

Science Museum

Our next door neighbours have been a resident of Exhibition Road since 1857 and operated as ‘The Science Museum’ since 1909. The ever-expanding collection contains steam engines from the Industrial Revolution, satellites from the Space Age and everything in between. They hold themed late night events the last Wednesday of every month – past events have included silent discos, hula hoop workshops, and talks on topics from freak shows to the last Tsars of Russia. Entry to the museum is free but exhibitions and other events may charge.

V&A Museum

Named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the V&A museum is the largest museum of design and decorative arts in the world! Formerly known as the South Kensington Museum, it was renamed the V&A museum in 1899 – Queen Victoria’s last public appearance. If you look at the exterior of the building on Exhibition Road, you can see the bomb damage from the Blitz of World War II, left as an enduring reminder of the values of the museum in a time of conflict. Today the collection is split into four departments; 1. Asia, 2. Furniture, Textiles and Fashion, 3. Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics & Glass, 4. Word & Image. It holds the work of some of the world’s leading fashion designers including Coco Chanel, Cristobal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino Garavani. Entry is free but exhibitions and events may charge.

Kensington Palace

The official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry and Meghan), Kensington Palace was built in 1605 and has played host to a number of British monarchs over the years. It was the birthplace of Queen Victoria and she was the first person to open the palace to the public in 1898. Today, you can explore state apartments of Queen Mary II from the 1690’s and of King George II from the 1700’s as well as exhibitions on Queen Victoria and Princess Diana. Kensington Palace gardens are also open to the public and entry is free – the Sunken Garden is definitely worth a visit. Take a picnic and sit by the round pond – but be careful the swans don’t take off with your lunch!

Royal Albert Hall

Officially opened to the public in March 1871 by HRH The Prince of Wales on behalf of his mother, HM Queen Victoria, who was in attendance but too upset to speak as the hall was named after her late husband Prince Albert who had died 10 years earlier. The stage at the Royal Albert Hall has been graced by some of the most famous artists in the world including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. The hall hosts the annual BBC Proms, a series of orchestral classical music concerts that take place across 8 weeks of the summer. Tours of the music hall are available.

Eating and Drinking:

Bumpkin

Located on Old Brompton Road, Bumpkin is a modern British ‘gastropub’, serving British classics such as Fish and Chips and Sausage & Mash, as well as modern dishes such as Curried Ox Cheek and Candied Beets Salad. The food is really high quality and uses fresh seasonal British produce. They have a set menu Monday-Friday until 4pm where you can get 2 courses for £15.95 or 3 courses for £21.95. Fun fact – Bumpkin was featured in an episode of British reality show Made in Chelsea.

Stein’s Berlin

Recently opened, Stein’s Berlin Bar and Restaurant sits directly opposite Imperial Business School on Princes Gate and is bringing a taste of Germany to South Kensington. The interior is what I would describe as ‘minimal chalet chic’ – very on trend right now. Renowned for its beer – Stein’s offers a wide range of German beers available in huge steins, from classic Paulaner Lager of Munich to modern Heidi Blonde craft beer produced in Elephant & Castle. Perhaps Schnapps and cocktails are more your bag? The Applestrudel Martini is delicious! They also have a great food menu to soak up all of that alcohol – it’s very traditional (and delicious) German fayre and the meter long sausage platter is not to be missed! Prost!

Eastside

A firm favourite amongst staff and ��ý alike – Eastside is located in Prince’s gardens on the ground floor of Linstead Hall. Serving pints of beer for around £3.60 – very competitively priced for London – this is the go-to spot on campus for cheap and cheerful food and drinks. The pizzas are HUGE and will only set you back around £8. Eastside is the perfect venue for you to grab a quick lunch between lectures or meet up with friends in the evenings. It gets busy on a Friday afternoon as Imperial staff and ��ý pop over for a post-work drink – you may even see us there from time to time.

Lido Café and Bar

The Lido Café and Bar located on the banks of The Serpentine in Hyde Park is the perfect spot for those #summervibes Instagram posts. On a sunny day you can sit outside and watch the swimmers brave the cold waters in the Lido and people-watch for hours. It might not have quite the same atmosphere in winter, but the food is really good!

South Kensington Farmers Market

Held on campus every Tuesday on the Queen’s Lawn, the South Kensington Farmers Market is a great place to grab some delicious street food at lunchtime. There’s a wide range of cuisines from all over the world and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, all using fresh local and seasonal produce. You can also pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, jams and chutneys! Some stalls do accept card payments – the market runs from 09:00-14:00.
