Decentralised finance (DeFi) isn’t about fancy investments, it’s about <strong>tearing down the walls of traditional finance</strong>. No more Goldman Sachs gatekeepers while the rest of us try to catch up. Now, anyone can take the wheel. Want to earn yield on Uniswap? Go for it. Need a loan without a credit check (but zero credit risk)? Done. DeFi is changing the structure of financial interactions, making financial services accessible everywhere — from New York to rural Kenya. It’s a real-time revolution, and everyone’s welcome.</p> <p>And it’s not just finance. The <a href="https://www.lemonade.com/blog/crypto-climate-coalition/">Lemonade Crypto Climate Coalition</a> used blockchain to provide climate insurance to nearly 7,000 Kenyan farmers — automated payouts, no paperwork, no middlemen. It’s real-world impact, solving problems traditional finance overlooks. Blockchain isn’t a future fantasy, it's <strong>already making a difference</strong>.</p> <h4><strong>What are the most common misconceptions about these technologies?</strong></h4> <p>In my experience, <strong>myths arise from misunderstandings</strong> or a stubborn refusal to adapt to a changing financial landscape. For instance, there's a misconception that crypto is just for criminals, yet <a href="https://www.chainalysis.com/blog/2024-crypto-crime-report-introduction/">according to Chainalysis</a>, illicit activity accounted only for 0.34 per cent of total cryptocurrency transaction volume in 2023, down from 0.42 per cent in 2022. Also, blockchain and Bitcoin are not the same thing: blockchain is the underlying tech powering countless applications beyond Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. One can be bullish about the underlying technology without being a Bitcoin believer. Finally, crypto is often seen as valueless, but <strong>its value lies in utility, scarcity, and trust. </strong></p> <h4><strong>How important was crypto in the 2024 US presidential election?</strong></h4> <p>Crypto has gone mainstream — and politicians know it. Following Donald Trump's US presidential election win in 2024, the crypto market went stratospheric, with Bitcoin reaching an all-time high of over $90,000 and an expectation that future regulations can finally be shaped by an understanding of crypto’s true potential. We now have Trump and Musk, two of the world’s most polarising figures, talking about crypto — and that is huge. When they support crypto, it brings attention, legitimacy and curiosity from the masses. <strong>For better or worse, they’re driving conversation</strong> — and that’s exactly what the space needs to grow.</p> <h4><strong>Will blockchain and crypto always be niche technologies?</strong></h4> <p>Not really. Millions of people are already involved in blockchain today, which makes it far from niche. Over the next five to 10 years, we’ll see more user-friendly interfaces (think apps as simple as today’s mobile banking), clear regulations, and further adoption, with <strong>increased education and awareness</strong>. </p> <p>It will also stretch way beyond finance. For instance, at the forefront of innovation is the intersection of artificial intelligence and crypto — less talked about in mainstream media, but it’s where some of the most exciting and often converging developments are happening. AI-driven smart contracts, autonomous financial systems, and data marketplaces are just a few examples.</p> <p>These changes will gradually bring blockchain and crypto into our daily lives, making them <strong>less mysterious and more accessible</strong>. The goal is to stop talking about the underlying technology, much like what happened with the internet — where we now focus on its applications rather than the tech itself.</p> <h4><strong>Can blockchain and digital currency fight financial fraud?</strong></h4> <p>Absolutely. Look at the <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/2016-bitfinex-hack">2016 Bitfinex hack</a>: $72 million worth of Bitcoin was stolen. Thanks to blockchain’s transparency, authorities traced transactions, and in 2022 they seized $3.6 billion worth of the stolen funds. Blockchain creates an unalterable record, making it actually harder for criminals to cover their tracks. Traceability, permanence and transparency are game-changers in combating fraud — though we still need to address emerging tricks like chain-hopping. It’s not perfect, but it’s a powerful tool in law enforcement’s arsenal.</p> <h4><strong>How can DeFi bring positive changes – and what are the challenges?</strong></h4> <p>DeFi is solving real, tangible problems. It’s also enabling rapid financial innovation that caters to diverse needs — whether it’s earning yield through liquidity provision or taking out instant loans. Take <a href="https://chain.link/education-hub/what-is-an-automated-market-maker-amm">automated market makers</a> like Uniswap, which have revolutionised liquidity by removing the need for traditional order books. Then there are flash loans — instant, uncollateralised loans that allow arbitrage opportunities and sophisticated financial maneuvers that were previously impossible. These innovations are addressing real frictions in the financial markets, but they’re often overshadowed by the price hype.</p> <p>But there are challenges too: smart contract vulnerabilities that can lead to big losses, scalability issues that need to be addressed to handle mass adoption, and liquidity fragmentation across different platforms. The good news? <strong>These challenges are being actively tackled</strong>. DeFi has enormous potential — it’s all about continuing to address these challenges, just as we have with every groundbreaking technology in history. </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <p>With over 30 years of experience in global banking and finance, including as Chair of Citi's Institutional Clients Group, Naveed Sultan has been at the forefront of digital transformation in the financial sector. Now a professor of practice at Imperial Business School, he sat down with us to discuss how technology is changing finance and business. </p> <h3>What opportunities does financial digital transformation offer to businesses? </h3> <p>The world is going through a major transition, which some observers are calling a fifth industrial revolution. Large parts of the economy are being reorganised, new business models, ecosystems and platforms are emerging, and lifestyles are changing.  </p> <p><a href="/business-school/ib-knowledge/strategy-leadership/9-digital-transformation-mistakes-all-organisations-make-and-how/">Digital transformation</a>, as the deployment of a range of technologies to create better economic and societal outcomes, is part of this, with data at its core. For the finance function within a business, if you can get data promptly and accurately through technology, with the right analytics, you can make better decisions and create better outcomes.  </p> <p>In time, these processes can make organisations more productive, efficient and accurate, and provide a greater level of confidence in their underlying activity, particularly from a compliance and risk perspective. The greater the confidence organisations have in their core processes and their operating and business models, the greater the confidence they have in doing business with clients.  </p> <h3>How is this playing out in the financial sector? </h3> <p>We can split the sector broadly into two camps: new fintech players such as Stripe, Square and Revolut, and established banks. On the consumer side, there has been growing competition between the two, but on the institutional side there’s actually greater collaboration.  </p> <p>Fintech firms need access to banks’ customers, while banks themselves see that fintech solutions can deliver better results for their clients. This has led to incumbents in the sector taking equity positions on emerging fintech players or buying them outright.  </p> <p>This allows banks to offer a better, more innovative and efficient proposition to their clients. And, as fintech firms become more successful, their valuations go up and banks benefit from investing in them. </p> <h3>What should businesses be aware of when planning digital transformation? </h3> <p>Whenever new technologies come up, there is a natural tendency to deploy them in the current operating model or on top of legacy systems, without considering the underlying core processes, or the organisational, cultural and talent implications. Generally, this is unlikely to be successful. </p> <p>Businesses have to first reorganise how they work, in a holistic way. They need strategic commitment from senior management, the right talent to manage data and deploy new technology, and plans in place to change culture and staff mindsets. Only when these key organisational and cultural requirements are met will a business be ready for technology-led change. </p> <p>And from a society-wide perspective too, we need to start seeing digital transformation not as a technology issue, but as a policy, strategic, cultural and organisational issue. All economic actors need to operate in alignment for an optimal transition, both economically and societally. </p> <h3>What role are specific technologies such as blockchain and AI playing in financial digital transformation? </h3> <p>At the surface level, they are already increasingly important. For example, <a href="/business-school/ib-knowledge/entrepreneurship-innovation-technology/what-blockchain-based-decentralised-platforms/">blockchain </a>provides smart contracts, improved supply chain management and greater transparency in transactions, while <a href="/business-school/ib-knowledge/technology/ai-and-business-5-big-thoughts-leaders/">AI </a>offers better risk management, fraud detection, algorithmic trading and personalised customer experiences. </p> <p>However, there is often an inflection point when technologies work in combination. So, when AI and blockchain are combined, we can see, for example, cross-border tokenisation of securities with smart contracts and enhanced fraud protection – something that combines the technologies New research shows how the decentralised coordination that underpins these platforms can provide organisations with novel design tools to achieve critical early-stage growth</h2> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--text paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--margin"> <div class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <p>At their core, <strong>most conventional organisations are run in a similar way</strong>: a managerial hierarchy provides instructions, resources and rewards to staff, who carry out tasks. However, the rise of cryptocurrencies over the past decade has brought into focus an alternative organisational form: the decentralised platform.</p> <p>Decentralised platforms work without managers and without employees bound by corporate contracts, and yet have seen their earliest exponent <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s41469-018-0038-1"><span>Bitcoin</span></a> (<span>followed by programmable smart contract implementations such as </span><a href="https://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/items/b53e9e4a-c504-4808-96fd-5bb612f8d398"><span>Ethereum</span></a>)<span> achieve an unprecedented market capitalisation, with millions of users and thousands of core contributors.</span></p> <p>Understanding how these platforms develop and grow offers important lessons for businesses, particularly as <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2022/01/24/what-is-web3-all-about-an-easy-explanation-with-examples/">Web 3</a> is gaining traction by enabling users to interact directly with decentralised platform infrastructures. <strong>Users will be able to own and exchange personal data, critical information and financial assets directly</strong>, without intermediaries. However, previous research on how platforms operate has been largely limited to looking at their centralised counterparts sponsored and operated by corporations and has focused on mature examples. Rarely have insights been offered into how decentralised platforms initially grow after launching.</p> <p>Our <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/smj.3455">research on the coordination and early-stage growth of decentralised platforms</a> fills this gap, exploring how decentralised platforms coordinate their activities to achieve growth after launching. Findings point to three key coordination mechanisms that underpin this novel organisation design:</p> <ul><li>Decentralised algorithmic coordination </li> <li>Decentralised social coordination</li> <li>Decentralised goal coordination </li> </ul><p>This research explores what they mean, the implications they have for businesses, and how they can be linked in different configurations to support early-stage platform growth.</p> <h2>Decentralised algorithmic coordination</h2> <p>Decentralised algorithmic coordination is about encoding organisational rules, routines and processes in software protocols to ensure stability and predictability for platform participants. In traditional organisations, this is achieved using time zones, fixed working hours and physical locations, allowing coordinated completion of tasks. For decentralised platforms, this is less simple.</p> <p>For example, network latency means messages sent simultaneously may arrive at different times, creating uncertainty in information flow. Meanwhile, the emergent nature of the network – with its ever-changing participant landscape – makes it difficult to apportion tasks accurately when information processing can be arbitrarily extended.</p> <blockquote> <p>Rarely have insights been offered on how decentralised platforms initially grow after launching</p> </blockquote> <p>For decentralised platforms, blockchain algorithms can solve this problem. <strong>The blockchain algorithm standardises and automates patterns of interaction between participants to enable coordination.</strong> This includes, for example, rules that specify the processes by which data should be verified and validated, and the speed at which information should be uploaded – despite the changing composition of participants.<span><span> </span></span>Algorithmic coordination protects against the instability created by members joining and leaving, which would otherwise alter the available computing power and disrupt the platform’s steady pace of information processing.</p> <p>In addition, <strong>algorithmic coordination specifies how tasks are divided and how work is rewarded.</strong> That is, algorithmic coordination defines how participants are selected to fill the blockchain with transaction data and how they get paid. This is effectively done through automated voting, which can be determined by proof-of-work (where a participant’s voting power is determined by how much computing power they contribute) or proof-of-stake (where voting power is connected to how much of the relevant cryptocurrency a participant owns).</p> <p>In this way, decentralised algorithmic coordination enabled by blockchain technology makes it possible for platforms to coordinate without managerial orchestration while ensuring the stability and accountability of transactions.</p> <h2>Decentralised social coordination</h2> <p>On the other hand, participants need to make collective decisions on which code to implement and, consequently, to upgrade. <strong>In the absence of a central authority, decentralised social coordination creates a sense of common understanding between platform participants.</strong> Social coordination affects two main parties: <strong>developers</strong> (participants who collaborate on making changes to the platform’s rules) and <strong>validators</strong> (participants who volunteer to monitor and enforce the platform’s rules).</p> <p><strong>Developers</strong> in a decentralised system coordinate through informal channels such as forums and social media, and formal documents such as improvement proposals, in which they propose new features. In both cases, <strong>social coordination fosters diversity of conversation topics explored</strong> (without any centralised management) that determines the extent of decentralisation. Coordinated development advances when new ideas are translated into code in the platform’s shared repository.</p> <p><strong>Validators</strong>, meanwhile, are concerned with daily operations of <strong>relaying information among platform participants to align their shared understanding of who is transacting what and with whom.</strong> They volunteer resources like electricity and in exchange they earn rewards that are determined by algorithm, rather than by a human manager. The more validators a platform has, the greater its degree of decentralisation. Therefore, decentralised social coordination pertains to the development and implementation of the platform rules.</p> <h2>Decentralised goal coordination</h2> <p>When it comes to goal setting, developers and validators can be coordinated through a foundation, which implies reduced decentralisation. <strong>Participants in decentralised platforms typically have diverse interests and differ on how their platforms’ goals should be defined and coordinated over time.</strong> The decentralised option is to have participants interact informally until they reach agreement. However, this is very time consuming, so some platforms choose to have a foundation as an external entity to guide the development of goals.</p> <p>Foundations have limited influence in the platform’s day-to-day work, but provide a means of communication and information for newcomers, educate users, and reward developers and validators. The latter can be done by establishing the foundation as a nonprofit, able to receive donations and provide grants (similar to those used in academia). When these rewards incentivise particular projects, foundations effectively narrow the breadth of a platform’s goals. In other words, they offer a way to coordinate goals through a degree of centralisation.</p> <h2>Growth configurations</h2> <p>These three mechanisms – <strong>algorithmic, social and goal coordination</strong> – work together to help decentralised platforms achieve early-stage growth. Interestingly, though, results suggest that no existing platform has done this by strongly decentralising all three factors. Rather, there are two particular configurations associated with early-stage growth, driven either by core contributors or by foundations.</p> <p>As the name suggests, "<strong>core contributor-driven algorithmic growth</strong>" relies on strongly decentralised algorithmic coordination, in combination with more centralised social coordination of participants through small-scale communities. This allows for information to be processed and allocated without much influence from developers and validators, who focus instead on platform development and daily operations. It also means there is less scope for disagreement between participants, reducing the need for a foundation and allowing focused groups to drive growth by coordinating participants at pace.</p> <p>The second configuration is called "<strong>vision-driven algorithmic growth</strong>". This relies on larger, more decentralised groups of developers and validators, with a foundation in place to provide an overall vision. The foundation can also help to arbitrate between disagreeing groups of platform participants. Growth is driven by the foundation incentivising development projects and rewarding consistency.</p> <h2>What are the alternative structures to centralised platforms and corporations?</h2> <p>Through these two growth configurations, <strong>this research shows that platforms can operate and grow without relying on a platform owner as the orchestrator.</strong> Some degree of centralisation appears to be associated with early-stage growth, as opposed to complete decentralisation, but it’s clear that the conditions now exist for organisations to break free of what Alfred Chandler called "<a href="https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Visible_Hand/hUkqx76sF6oC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Alfred+Chandler+called+%E2%80%98the+visible+hand+of+the+manager&printsec=frontcover">the visible hand of the manager</a>".</p> <p>Decentralised digital platforms are already making this a reality. Decentralised autonomous organisation platforms such as MakerDAO and Aragon, for example, are leveraging blockchain-enabled decentralised architecture to coordinate<span> </span><a href="https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/oa-edit/10.4324/9781315211909-3/internal-external-governance-blockchain-based-organizations-ying-ying-hsieh-jean-philippe-jp-vergne-sha-wang"><span>voting and governance</span></a><span>. As of April 2022, there were 5,000 active DAOs in operation, and this number is only likely to grow rapidly in the coming years.</span></p> <p>Other decentralised applications include decentralised finance, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain gaming platforms. These rely on decentralised coordination to enable users to directly interact with the platform and with peers through digitally owning and exchanging personal data and assets. with blockchain and what the future holds for digital money</h3> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--text paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--margin"> <div class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <p>Despite its erratic nature, the cryptocurrency market continues to be a source of fascination for investors and the public alike.</p> <p>When <a href="/people/y.hsieh">Dr Ying-Ying Hsieh</a>, Assistant Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Imperial Business School, first came across cryptocurrency in 2014, she was similarly fascinated. At that time, the industry was still in its infancy and most people hadn’t heard of bitcoin – and, if they had, <a href="https://www.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/posts/investigation-fraud-and-risk/crypto-crime-caveats/">many associated the burgeoning technology with criminal activity</a>.</p> <p>“The engineer in me wanted to truly understand what it is, how it works, and what’s unique about it, and when I figured it out, I decided to study the phenomenon no matter what – even if bitcoin died the next day or before I finished my PhD,” she says.</p> <p>Dr Hsieh, also the Associate Centre Director of Imperial's <a href="/cryptocurrency/">Centre for Cryptocurrency Research & Engineering</a>, focuses her research on the organisational design of blockchain-based decentralised platforms. She also looks at the growth and decline of decentralised platforms, participation in them, the effectiveness of governance and their designs, which allows her to draw parallels from her background in materials science and engineering.</p> <h4>Regulating digital money</h4> <p>The value of cryptocurrency lies in its function as a way of exchanging monetary value online without intermediaries, but perhaps another reason it has such a devoted following is the ideological and political possibilities it presents.</p> <p>“The purpose of creating digital cash is to take back control of our money and to be our own bank,” says Dr Hsieh. “It’s an opportunity to build a financial system that is decentralised. It isn’t sponsored by a corporation, there are no managers, no CEOs, no employees to manage all the transactions in the same way as traditional companies.</p> <p>“This decentralisation can hopefully help us get closer to the idea of the democratisation of money, finance and data ownership.”</p> <p>Despite these possibilities, <strong>cryptocurrency also poses a dilemma for financial regulators</strong>: how to avoid killing the innovation prematurely and, at the same time, protect investors and consumers. In January 2022, Dr Hsieh <a href="https://news.trust.org/item/20220104100925-1puxn/">told Reuters</a> that, in the future we can “expect a more well-defined regulatory framework to emerge, with a goal to bridge the crypto world with the traditional financial systems”.</p> <blockquote> <p>For me, teaching informs research and vice versa</p> </blockquote> <p>So, what would this new financial landscape look like? Dr Hsieh believes it is likely to be open, flexible and experimental.</p> <p>“It’s a big question and <strong>regulators are experimenting with different ideas</strong>, and trying to see to what extent we have to reinvent the wheel. It isn’t possible to apply the existing regulatory framework to the new system because there are many unique features [to cryptocurrency]."</p> <p>Despite these difficulties, Dr Hsieh says cryptocurrencies are here to stay.</p> <p>“It isn’t like it was back in 2014, when there was still a lot of uncertainty. Today, we are quite sure that this is not going to go away, so regulations become necessary if organisations want to adopt this technology.”</p> <h4>The future of cryptocurrency</h4> <p>Dr Hsieh’s current research focus is blockchain-based platforms and how they can perform effectively without the usual managerial hierarchies and authorities seen in other financial institutions like banks.</p> <p>Having initially investigated and published research on the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/smj.3455">decentralised structure of cryptocurrency platforms</a>, she is now broadening her research to investigate the implications of decentralised platforms for participants, such as developers.</p> <p>Beyond her work at Imperial, Dr Hsieh is keen to share her research, its relevance and potential impact, with other experts in the sector. In July 2022, she took part in a Chatham House event, <a href="https://www.chathamhouse.org/events/all/members-event/crypto-going-global-what-next-digital-money">Crypto Going Global: What Next for Digital Money?</a>, during which experts explored what the future holds for cryptocurrencies in a turbulent and uncertain time for digital finance. In October, she spoke at the <a href="https://orgdesigncomm.com/Annual-Conference-2022">Organization Design Community Annual Conference 2022</a> about decentralised autonomous organisations and their implications for collaboration. </p> <blockquote> <p>The purpose of creating digital cash is to take back control of our money and to be our own bank</p> </blockquote> <p><strong>She is also passionate about educating the next generation of innovators</strong> and has won two Teaching Excellence Awards, which are nominated and voted for by ý. Dr Hsieh believes research and teaching should go together for academics.</p> <p>“For me, teaching informs research and vice versa. The most rewarding part of teaching is when my ý tell me my teaching has motivated them to pursue a particular career path or further education.”</p> <p>Being an academic has allowed Dr Hsieh to fulfil her intellectual curiosity, as well as the chance to have a positive impact on the world.</p> <p>“I am able to ask interesting questions, discover the answers and hopefully my research and my cryptocurrencies' massive carbon footprints </h3> <p>In September 2022, one of the world’s most popular cryptocurrencies made a monumental move to clean up its act – by switching to a new method of validation. In doing so, it slashed its energy use and potentially saved millions of tonnes of carbon emissions. </p> <p>This long-anticipated move was made by Ethereum, second only to Bitcoin in popularity and the first leading "crypto" to switch to this new method. Ethereum’s move is estimated to cut its energy use by 99.5 per cent, according to the Ethereum Foundation. </p> <p>If other leading cryptos were to follow suit, the impact upon global warming would be dramatic; <strong>the most popular virtual currencies each consume the equivalent power of a medium-sized country</strong>. Their soaring popularity – despite a market crash in 2022 – means their energy use has rocketed: <strong>since 2021, Bitcoin has consumed more than 200 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity, up from around 75 TWh in the previous few years.</strong> </p> <p>This heavy carbon footprint has led some countries such as China to ban the trade and "mining" of cryptocurrencies. And there’s another cost: the vast amount of electrical hardware required to keep track of transactions on the blockchain, the indelible public ledger. It’s here where all crypto transactions are recorded after being calculated.  </p> <h4>Why are cryptos so power hungry? </h4> <p>Cryptos are virtual: they are created or "mined" by individuals or groups using powerful computers around the clock to solve complex mathematical puzzles. When crypto owners buy or sell a coin, or a slice of it, the transaction is collected in a block. Individuals or "miners" compete to be the fastest to solve the block puzzle. The fastest miner able to solve the puzzle adds the new block to the blockchain – and scoops a reward, such as new coins (or a fraction of them) and a transaction fee.</p> <p>If crypto prices rise, then mining coins becomes more profitable, and more miners join the race, which makes the competition harder – resulting in greater energy use. In their search for the solution, the unsuccessful miners will still have consumed vast quantities of power. </p> <p>This is called <strong>proof-of-work (PoW) mining</strong> and it’s virtually tamper proof, hence a reluctance to change. PoW allows the crypto community to track the source of all the virtual currency, and check for double spending, as well as unlock new coins. </p> <p>Ethereum, launched in 2015, has now switched over to a different method of validation, known as <strong>proof of stake (PoS)</strong>. It requires a fraction of the energy and computing power and a laptop is powerful enough for a user to validate it. Rather than compete as in PoW, users can put in a "stake" – a holding of tens of thousands of dollars of Ethereum – to be eligible to be chosen via an otherwise largely random selection. If selected, a user is asked to validate a block of transactions on the blockchain and earns just a transaction fee.</p> <p>This is a much less energy intensive process: there’s no longer a need to be the fastest among miners. In fact, no mining is required at all with PoS, as all cryptos in circulation have already been created. But if validators are inaccurate or dishonest, they risk losing their entire stake.  </p> <h4>How widespread is PoS? </h4> <p>PoW cryptos still dominate the market. There are more than 20,000 cryptocurrencies but fewer than 300 use PoS rather than PoW. Shifting from one system to the other is complex: it took years and a few dry runs for Ethereum to make the change, after declaring its intention to move over in 2017. But by and large the Bitcoin community – by far the largest – is yet to be convinced and prefers to stick to tried and tested methods. <strong>Whatever the benefits of crypto, it will damage the climate.  </strong></p> <p>Now we must ask, <strong>are we more scared of the predictable consequences of a financial crisis or the unpredictable ones of a climate crisis?</strong> As nations are failing to meet commitments to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius above industrial levels as laid out in the 2015 Paris Agreement, crypto’s carbon costs deserve urgent scrutiny.  </p> <p>If law makers could force crypto miners to reveal the environmental cost of their work, the transparency and subsequent reputational cost could deter investors and pressure cryptos to clean up. At the same time, markets could flag the greener benefits of PoS cryptos and contribute to a major market shift away from PoW. At the latest UN climate summit in Egypt, we heard that humanity must "co-operate or perish”. As we race towards a climate crisis, we can’t afford to ignore crypto’s unacceptable carbon footprint.  </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--text
