London, a city rich in history and innovation, where cobblestone streets echo with countless tales. Just as Arthur Conan Doyle brought Sherlock Holmes' adventures to life on these very streets, my own journey began when I joined Imperial Business School.

Choosing Imperial Business School

With an engineering background and a stint at a top management consulting firm, I felt there were still missing pieces in my career puzzle. It became clear that marketing was the key to completing that picture.

Applying to the MSc Strategic Marketing at Imperial was a clear choice. It has turned out to be the ideal blend of everything I had envisioned. While the prestigious ranking and the Imperial's esteemed reputation are significant draws, what truly sets this programme apart is its comprehensive approach. It’s not merely marketing; it’s a fusion of strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation. As I look back on my journey so far, here are my reflections.

Embracing the unknown

Embrace the unknown there and take risks. Initially daunting, I had to step out of my comfort zone to improve in areas where I felt less confident. The programme has helped me enhance my presentation and time management skills and take on leadership roles, fostering personal growth and newfound confidence in my abilities.

I always thought marketing was just about creativity, but as I near the end of my programme, I realised it’s much more layered. MSc Strategic Marketing has taught us to think strategically and adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, preparing us to be future leaders. It has made me even more curious and observant. Staying abreast of industry trends and continuously learning new skills is crucial to staying ahead in our careers.

Learning at Imperial

There will be opportunities for you to choose your electives, to fill gaps in your knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed electives like Effective Crisis Management and Market Decision Making which were different from what I had studied and gave me an insight into what goes behind building a successful business. Apart from this, it is imperative to make the right choice for the summer term. I opted for a consulting project from the other options available because I wanted to apply my learnings to a practical setup and working with a client like Pladis, one of the largest biscuit manufacturers in the world has been one of the most rewarding experiences.

Learning at Imperial goes well beyond the classroom. Since the beginning, I have been actively involved in various clubs, holding positions such as Chief Marketing Officer for the India Business Careers Club and Head of Retail for the FMCG, Luxury, and Retail Careers Club. I also dedicated time to volunteering for Imperial-supported events and social causes. Additionally, I enjoyed the opportunity to choreograph for the annual cultural event of the Indian Society. This involvement has not only enriched my educational journey but also equipped me with leadership skills and provided invaluable exposure to diverse aspects of student life, making my experience fulfilling.

Team work

We’ve all heard the saying "Teamwork makes the Dream work," a significant portion of the coursework here revolves around group projects but experiencing it first-hand was more challenging than I expected. Collaborating with ��ý from diverse backgrounds, each bringing a unique perspective, has been both intellectually stimulating and humbling. It required mastering the art of unlearning and relearning, more than just dividing tasks—it’s been about leveraging each person’s unique strengths to achieve a common goal. And, in this journey, you come to realise that your team members often become lifelong friends.

Value of Networking

You quickly learn that "one's network is their net worth." The programme provides countless avenues like Career fairs, and guest sessions, allowing you to forge strong relationships with leaders you look up to. A standout experience for me was the CMP lectures delivered by the industry experts that helped build a deeper understanding of several topics and breakfast with board events during the Woman@Imperial Week, where sessions offered the chance to engage in profound conversations with trailblazing women.

My favourite facilities at Imperial

Imperial Business School's campus in South Kensington is a vibrant blend of modern architecture and historic charm which has made it an inspiring place for my education so far. There are so many resources and facilities available to make the most of your time studying here.

The library has been a great place to go after classes to finish up some readings, work on papers, and even catch up on lectures. Various floors serve distinct purposes in the building. The first floor is great for collaboration, featuring large round tables with ample seating for group work. Meanwhile, other floors are designated as either silent or quiet zones, providing a relaxed environment for focused work when needed.

The modern classrooms at the Business School have been another standout feature during my studies. Each seat is equipped with a power outlet, and the lectures are recorded, allowing me to review any material I might have missed.

Campus life at Imperial Business School

Studying on campus has become one of my favourite things to do since moving. Situated in the heart of South Kensington, the Business School is a short distance from Hyde Park, surrounded by diverse food options, and conveniently located near High Street Kensington for enjoyable in-between class shopping.

The campus is always buzzing with energy, encouraging collaboration and innovation. It is nice to see a diverse student body and faculty bringing lots of different perspectives. There are always engaging workshops, networking events, and alumni talks that you can attend, complementing the academic programme.

Must visit London locations

London is so rich in history and culture and there is always more to explore and discover. Of course, we have iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge, along with incredible museums such as the Victoria & Albert, Science, and Natural History - all just steps away from the Business School. Beyond that, there are vibrant areas like Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Soho and Borough Market which are must-visit areas for food enthusiasts who are looking to get a taste of London’s culinary scene.

Soho has been my favourite due to its vibrant cultural mix, and plethora of restaurants, bars, and cafes to explore and indulge in. I have so many memories in this area, from trying new foods, to discovering hidden gems, and enjoying live performances at the iconic West End theatres. Soho caters to many tastes and interests, and it encapsulates the spirit of London.

My experience studying in London

Studying in London is a very unique and enriching experience that goes beyond just academics. The city's diversity broadens your perspective and fosters a global mindset. Meeting people from all over the world, you learn so much personally which complements your academics.

We are also in a city that is one of the largest and most impactful in the world. There are world-renowned businesses, financial institutions, and entrepreneurs throughout the city creating an unparalleled networking opportunity. The city’s cultural diversity is also mirrored in its neighbourhoods as each offers a different flavour, atmosphere, and experience.

I truly believe studying in London ensures ��ý not only gain a top-tier education but immerse themselves in a hub of innovation, culture, and business that makes the experience an unforgettable journey of growth and discovery.

My LGBTQ+ Scholarship

Discovering that I had been awarded the LGBTQ+ Scholarship was an incredibly emotional and uplifting moment for me. This was not only a recognition of my academic achievements and potential, but also a validation of my commitment to championing EDI (equality, diversity, and inclusion) within my community.

This scholarship makes me feel seen, valued, and supported in my education. I am proud to be part of Imperial Business School, as it is keen to promote initiatives to encourage the participation of LGBTQ+ people in business education and to support diversity.

This scholarship is not just financial support; it is a platform to amplify the efforts of ��ý who want to change things and contribute to a more inclusive and equal business world.

Why I applied for this scholarship

I was motivated to apply for the LGBTQ+ scholarship at the Business School because I have a strong passion and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Throughout my life, I have always strived to raise awareness about the discrimination of underrepresented groups and the need for equal rights in our society. When I heard about an Imperial scholarship, I saw it as an opportunity to align my passion with my education.

My motivation stems from a deep desire to make a real difference. By studying at Imperial Business School, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make a change in society, including with regards to EDI issues. This scholarship is not just financial support; it is a platform to amplify the efforts of ��ý who want to change things and contribute to a more inclusive and equal business world.

What this scholarship means to me

The scholarship I have been awarded has a deeply personal and academic significance for me. First and foremost, it encourages me to work towards creating a more welcoming environment within the university by implementing initiatives and working towards a more diverse institution. Furthermore, it inspires me to devote my attention to studying how to promote inclusivity and address LGBTQ+ issues in the business world.

In the last year alone 1 in 5 LGBTQ+ people in the UK have experienced discrimination in their workplace because of their sexual orientation or gender identity (based on YouGov polling of over 5000 LGBT people). As a future business leader, I am motivated to play my part in changing this. The LGBTQ+ scholarship that supported me during my studies at Imperial Business School will contribute to making this change happen.

My advice to others, considering applying

My advice to aspiring scholarship recipients is to think deeply about what sets them apart from others and why they are the ideal candidates for the scholarship. It is important to be authentic, express your unique qualities, and tell your own story in an engaging way. Finally, I think it is crucial to show how the scholarship will enable you to contribute to a better world. Look to the future and explain how your studies at Imperial Business School will enable you to promote positive change in society.

We believe that a Master’s degree at Imperial Business School should be flexible, enriching and a chance for ��ý to immerse themselves in environments that they might not otherwise have access to. That is why we offer the Extended Term as an option, allowing ��ý to extend their programme duration to 16 months to commit to a longer Work Placement or Global Exchange.

For Frank Yang, a recent MSc in Management (MiM)* graduate, the Extended Global Exchange was the perfect opportunity to explore technical business roles, deepen his knowledge and immerse himself fully in a new academic and cultural environment.

Completing a full term at one of our partner institutions in Madrid, Frank was able to immerse himself more intentionally in this global learning environment, creating a richer, more transformative Master’s experience. He completed his Master’s at Imperial feeling confident and equipped with the knowledge to tackle tech-oriented business roles. In the below blog, Frank shares his experience on the exchange in his own words.

Pivoting careers through Imperial

I initially moved to London for my undergraduate degree in Educational Psychology at 18. As I progressed through my studies, I realised that I wanted to pivot into the technology sector and take on some more tech-heavy business roles. This is what drew me to Imperial’s MSc in Management (MiM) programme for my Master’s studies. The cutting-edge ecosystem and strong reputation in STEM-related disciplines felt like the ideal environment to support this transition.

Supporting my career goals with global opportunities

From the very start of my Master’s, it became clear that there were numerous ways that I could tailor my learning to suit my career goals. During Induction Week, the Extended Term, and specifically the Extended Global Exchange, was highlighted during a conversation with the Global Student Life Manager. Having lived in Beijing, Singapore and London, this immersive experience presented a chance for me to expand my horizons further.

Practically, the Extended Term advanced my graduation timeline, enabling me to access a broader pool of internship opportunities for my Work Placement. I leveraged this opportunity to try out more technical business roles, allowing me to test and refine my career assumptions as someone seeking to pivot between fields.

Researching partner institutions

After expressing my interest in the Extended Global Exchange, the Business School provided a well-structured website with detailed information on each partner institution, including brochures and contact points. This gave me a comprehensive overview of the available opportunities and helped me shortlist potential destinations early on.

The exchange team also maintained an open-door policy. Booking calls was extremely straightforward and staff were consistently responsive and transparent. Any unanswered questions, such as exchange timing details, were clarified as soon as confirmed information became available. This allowed me to evaluate my top choices thoroughly and with confidence.

Choosing IE Business School in Madrid

Specifically, I chose to undertake the exchange at Imperial’s partner institution, IE Business School. There were several reasons why I chose this institution, including its beautiful Madrid location, its growing reputation in digital innovation, finance and entrepreneurship, and its focus on highly applied pedagogy, which is a personal interest of mine after studying education. Having also studied Spanish since middle school, it’s long been a wish of mine to live in Spain, so I had to go for it.

The most decisive step was a call organised with the Global Exchange staff at IE Business School. The session provided clarity on academic structure, course delivery and student life. The insights shared during that conversation ultimately confirmed that it was the right fit for me.

Applying MSc in Management (MiM) learnings to a new academic environment

From the outset, my studies on the MSc in Management (MiM) programme set me up for success on the exchange. As a highly international cohort, I worked in diverse teams at Imperial, which trained me to communicate effectively across cultures and different working styles. Being able to navigate multicultural environments was invaluable at IE Business School, where classrooms were similarly global and collaborative.

Academically, the technical grounding and applied problem solving on my programme translated directly to the classroom environment at IE Business School. Concepts and approaches developed during Imperial’s Marketing Analytics elective gave me the confidence to contribute meaningfully to IE’s FinTech module, especially around applying machine learning algorithms to emerging financial technologies. Bringing this knowledge into group work at IE Business School sparked engaging in-class discussions and added depth to our projects.

Together with my Imperial classmate, Umang, who was also on the exchange at IE, we achieved the top score in the class.

Representing Imperial in a global competition

A personal highlight for me was attending the Tech Venture Bootcamp by the IE School of Science and Technology, a university-wide start-up competition. We formed teams on the spot, defined users and pain points, devised business strategies, developed a technical product and pitched in 10 days. I joined the team as the developer, as I wanted to try something new, and learnt how to build a full data engineering pipeline. This was the perfect learning opportunity to extend the skills I had developed at the Business School.

While we did not win the grand prize, we were a finalist for the Sustainability Award out of 20 teams. I made great friends that I keep in touch with, and with sharp contributions, I hope we represented Imperial in a positive manner.

Academic and cultural growth in Madrid

Beyond the curriculum, the exchange offered moments that challenged how I learn and engage. One standout moment was when a senior leader from McKinsey & Company came to deliver a guest lecture. Through clarity and presence, he demonstrated what elite communication at the highest level looks like during a live Q&A.

Living and studying in Madrid for an extended period also pushed me to adapt culturally. I joined a mixed martial arts gym in the local community with my course mate and regularly took the opportunity to develop my conversational Spanish skills.

The benefits of an Extended Global Exchange from my experience

For me, the defining feature of this initiative was its duration. Studying for a full academic term allows ��ý to move beyond the novelty and tourist phase and genuinely experience daily life in another country. It creates the space to establish important routines, build deeper friendships and engage meaningfully in academics.

Whilst short-term exchanges compress the experience into a tight window, a full-term exchange offered me a chance to find a more balanced rhythm. I was able to focus on my learning, whilst also integrating into everyday life in Madrid. My experience wasn’t a rushed one, but a chance to intentionally live an international study experience.

As a result, it has significantly enhanced both the value and enjoyment of my Master’s experience. Not only was I able to fulfil my dream of living in Spain whilst continuing to develop specialised knowledge in finance and technology but also see how the knowledge built on the MSc in Management (MiM) programme can be applied to a global learning environment.

Enhancing my CV with the Extended Global Exchange

The exchange expanded both my technical exposure and project portfolio. The Imperial ecosystem is rife with opportunities, so by extending my studies with the Global Exchange, it meant that I had more time to dive deeper into my areas of interest.

As a result, I now have tangible technical projects that demonstrate my ability to operate at the intersection of technology and business. In addition, developing conversational Spanish strengthens my international profile and supports long-term global mobility.

Together, the Extended Global Exchange enhances both the depth and breadth of my CV, complementing the strong analytical foundation developed during my studies at the Business School.

Going forward, I plan on exploring tech-oriented business roles such as AI transformation or product management, utilising everything I’ve learnt across both Imperial and IE.

Why you should consider an Extended Global Exchange

This is almost a risk-free opportunity to explore somewhere new in a fully immersive manner. You should definitely consider an Extended Global Exchange if you are:

Naturally curious and open to new environments
Willing to step outside of your familiar routines
Intentional about immersing yourself in the local culture.

Approaching the exchange with openness and flexibility will lead to both a rewarding academic experience and a fulfilling personal one.

Imperial Business School did an all-around brilliant job in making the whole experience extremely smooth and enjoyable, including helping to make visa arrangements. To be extremely frank (no pun intended), this was a top highlight of my life thus far … life is short - say yes when you can.

MSc Finance

Our MSc Finance programme has demonstrated success in helping ��ý secure competitive positions within the finance sector, including investment banking, asset management, and consultancy. Additionally, it supports our MSc Finance ��ý in achieving their Chartered Financial Analyst designation through our participation in the CFA University Affiliation Programme.

Our cohort is made up of 86 ��ý, 33% of these being female. 32 nationalities are represented in our class, exposing our ��ý to new cultures, and providing them with an opportunity for innovative global thinking. Our ��ý join us from varying backgrounds including Economics (42%), Finance/Accounting (22%), Business/Management (14%) Engineering/Technology (10%) as well as Mathematics (7%).

Why did you chose to study MSc Finance at Imperial Business School? 

Growing up in the U.S., I've always been passionate about exploring new places, experiences, and ideas. Although I’m from California, I’ve also lived in Newport Beach, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York for internships and family moves. As a senior at Vanderbilt, I knew I wanted to pursue a Master’s in London but wasn’t familiar with the options. After some research, I discovered Imperial and was drawn to its London location and strong track record of placing graduates in investment banking.

After speaking with alumni and exploring the curriculum, I felt confident that Imperial was the right choice. The MSc Finance programme brings together a collaborative, diverse community of people from around the world, all driven to excel in finance and grow personally and professionally.

My long-term goal is to become an impactful business leader who makes a positive difference. What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your academic life, have you joined any clubs and societies?  

Outside of academics, I love spending time with friends—whether hiking, going to the beach, discovering new restaurants, baking or just relaxing together. I’m also passionate about endurance sports, having completed three Ironman races, two 50-mile ultra-marathons, and several marathons. I’m a fan of Orangetheory and hot yoga and am also a certified 200-hour yoga instructor. While clubs haven’t started yet, I’m excited to get involved once they do!

What are your long-term career goals, and how do you plan to achieve them? 

My long-term goal is to build a career in Investment Banking, focusing on equity capital markets where I can drive financial decisions that support business growth, innovation, and sustainable investments. I want to be involved in strategic capital raising and advisory roles, guiding companies in their financial strategy and helping them seize market opportunities.

I aim to have an impact and help shape a finance industry where investment decisions are not only smart but also drive positive change alongside strong returns, supporting economic growth while promoting responsible and sustainable practices.

What networking opportunities have you had since starting your programme? 

As a recipient of the Women in Leadership in Finance Scholarship, I attended a breakfast with other scholars, where hearing everyone’s stories and connecting with ambitious peers was truly inspiring. The career fair was another great opportunity; I engaged with companies that align with my goals and left with valuable insights and contacts.

Our induction day at the Science Museum was a highlight—we connected with ��ý from other master's programmes over rooftop drinks, which made me feel part of the wider Imperial community. Networking with alumni from previous cohorts has also been incredibly helpful; their advice on navigating the programme and early career tips was invaluable.

In under a month, I’ve connected with a diverse group of ��ý, professionals, and alumni, each interaction offering valuable perspectives. The support from Imperial’s career teams has been exceptional, with numerous events and a network that are essential for building connections and advancing our careers.

What was your highlight from Induction Week? 

The rooftop drinks at the Science Museum were definitely a highlight! Beyond the stunning views, it was a perfect opportunity to bond with my classmates and connect with ��ý from other programs. Exploring the museum privately with new peers made the experience truly memorable—a special start to the year that captured what it means to be an Imperial student: connecting, learning, and finding inspiration everywhere.

Why did you chose to study MSc Finance & Accounting at Imperial Business School? 

I chose Imperial Business School because of its unique position at the intersection of science, technology, and business. Its commitment to innovation and excellence, coupled with London’s status as a global financial hub, offers a dynamic environment where I can gain hands-on experience and insight into the financial industry, empowering me to make a meaningful impact in this field.

How does it feel to be studying in London? 

It is a great privilege to be able to study in a global financial capital and a hub for sustainable finance and impact investing. Whilst I know London very well from visiting the city, it is a very different feeling living and breathing the London life.

Furthermore, it is an amazing opportunity to be in a dynamic city with over half a million other ��ý, making the most of the networking opportunities. I am looking forward to exploring the hidden gems of London, watching football games, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your academic life, have you joined any clubs and societies?  

Outside of academics, I am an avid believer in community involvement. I have been elected chair of the Student Staff Liaison Committee, and President of the Belgian Society at Warwick, and I plan to maintain these types of commitments at Imperial. I am a sports enthusiast, captaining a football team, playing club tennis and cycling. I have already played football for Imperial in a classic London derby against UCL, getting involved with sports and London life early on. Imperial has many societies and opportunities, I cannot wait to get involved in.

Why did you choose to study MSc Finance & Accounting at Imperial Business School?

After completing my undergraduate degree in Accounting, I wanted to advance my skill set in a more rigorous and in-demand field. Imperial Business School’s MSc in Finance & Accounting offers a range of core modules—such as Fundamentals of Derivatives, Applied Econometrics—that provide a strong foundation in theoretical and technical aspects of finance.

The programme also includes elective options, allowing me to tailor my learning to my specific career interests, as well as an applied project module, which offers a practical approach to solidify my knowledge. Graduates of our MSc Financial Technology will develop and strengthen the skills needed to pursue a successful and innovative career in the dynamic field of fintech and beyond.

Our one-year MSc Financial Technology programme enhances ��ý' essential quantitative and analytical abilities, including coding and programming skills. The curriculum combines highly relevant modules and electives to equip ��ý with insights into the financial sector while offering practical experience through an immersive learning approach. Why did you choose to study MSc Financial Technology at Imperial Business School?

I come from a technical background as a Software Engineer and studied Computer Science for my undergraduate degree. In my previous company, I learned how a financial technology company operates, particularly in handling compliance and regulatory initiatives from governments and regulatory bodies worldwide. By joining the MSc Financial Technology programme at Imperial Business School, I am gaining a deeper understanding of financial markets and instruments that are crucial for my future career. It also allows me to enhance the software engineering skills I have acquired and apply them in a financial context.

What networking opportunities have you had so far?

I currently serve as the Head of Events for the Technology, Media and Telecommunication (TMT) and the Women Mean Business Careers Club. These two clubs reflect my passion and experience as a women pursuing career in the finance and technology field, and I had the chance to network with Business School ��ý with similar career aspiration. Through these clubs, I organise events to help other ��ý to get a glimpse on what is it like to work in the industry, by learning first hand from seasoned professionals and Business School alumni.

What does being a woman in finance mean to you?

Being a woman in finance means breaking boundaries in a traditionally male-dominated field. It provides me with an opportunity to prove that talent and dedication are what drive success, regardless of gender. I am inspired by the network of women who excel in this field and am committed to paying it forward by supporting and uplifting other women in finance. I’ll do this through my role as a Student Ambassador for the Business School and by organising programmes in the Women Mean Business Careers Club that foster growth, mentorship, and empowerment.

MSc Investment & Wealth Management

The MSc Investment & Wealth Management is a one-year programme that incorporates the latest industry theories alongside opportunities to develop innovative solutions for real-world investment challenges. This unique and challenging experience combines cutting-edge research, practical applications and a diverse range of topics. You will gain the skills to apply financial theories effectively to the business of wealth and asset management.

This year, we are joined by 86 ��ý, 43% being female. Our class represents 36 nationalities, giving ��ý the opportunity to create global business connections, contribute different ideas and solutions in the classroom and thereby learn from one another. 34% of the class come from a Finance/Accounting background, 33% from Economics, and 14% from Business/Management.

Why did you choose to study MSc Investment & Wealth Management at Imperial Business School? 

The programme is an ideal next step toward my goal of becoming a private equity analyst focused on healthcare. Inspired by my own experiences with mental health challenges, I founded the “Along with Blue” initiative to raise mental health awareness and support those in need. Imperial’s commitment to innovation, well-being, and social impact offers the perfect environment to develop this project further, especially in a healthcare context where I’m eager to drive meaningful change.

With its focus on applied projects, industry exposure, and real-world case studies, the programme will equip me with essential analytical and technical skills for private equity. What networking opportunities have you had since starting your programme? 

The Admitted Students Day in Singapore offered my first chance to meet peers and faculty, laying the foundation for a strong network. Later, at the Scholarship Winners’ Breakfast I connected with other scholars, shared insights from my “Along with Blue” initiative, and explored ways to contribute to the Imperial community.

The Finance Trek on 19th September was especially impactful, allowing me to meet alumni and gain insights into the programme and industry. These interactions helped me reflect on my strengths, shape my personal brand, and explore ways to stand out in finance. Each of these events continues to shape my personal and professional growth and expand my network.

What are your long-term career goals, and how do you plan to achieve them? 

My goal is to become a healthcare-focused private equity analyst, combining my finance expertise with a commitment to mental health advocacy. Through my “Along with Blue” initiative, I’ve seen firsthand how businesses can drive societal impact, especially in healthcare, and I am passionate about using private equity to support companies that prioritise mental health and healthcare innovation. My M&A private equity internship in London has reinforced my focus on healthcare investments and demonstrated how strategic finance can transform this sector.

MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering

The MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering prepares our future graduates for careers in financial engineering and risk management. Our programme is accredited by the Professional Risk Manager’s International Association (PRMIA) and is designed for technically minded ��ý, focusing heavily on quantitative skills. Our ��ý are enthusiastic about immersing themselves in the in-depth analytical study of risk management and financial engineering.

With a cohort size of 173 and 30 nationalities represented, this is a diverse class. 49% of the class are female. Our ��ý join us from a variety of backgrounds including Mathematics (34%), Economics (25%) and Engineering/Technology (13%).

Why did you choose to study MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering student at Imperial Business School?

Imperial Business School is well known for its Finance programmes. But I was also drawn to the diversity and networking opportunities Imperial provides. Getting to learn from people from all different backgrounds, with different goals and experiences, has been really rewarding.

The school’s strong links to the finance industry were another draw since that opens doors to great networking and events. For anyone interested in finance, Imperial feels like the right place to be.

What does it mean to you to be a woman in finance?

Being a woman in finance feels both exciting and challenging. It’s great to be in a field where women are taking on more important roles and bringing new perspectives.

At the same time, it’s a field where we still have room to grow in terms of inclusivity. I’m motivated to contribute to making the industry feel welcoming to more people, and I’m inspired by the women around me who are pushing for progress.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of your academic life, have you joined any clubs and societies?

I’m part of the Ice Skating Society, which is always a fun break from studying! I also joined the Investment Society to keep up with finance outside of class.

Volunteering is also really important to me. I was president of a humanitarian club before, and I’ve been a member of a bunch of different groups focused on community work. I find giving back to the community really grounding and rewarding, so I try to stay involved wherever I can.

How does it feel to be studying in London, what do you look forward to exploring most?

Living and studying in London has been exciting! There’s always something to do, whether it’s exploring different neighborhoods, trying new food, or just experiencing the city’s unique mix of cultures and traditions. I’m especially looking forward to diving into the finance side of London more – being close to the finance district and seeing the industry up close is motivating and makes the experience feel even more real.

Completing an application for an MSc programme can be a daunting prospect. Even candidates who have fully researched the application process and entry requirements, often still ask us ‘What does the ideal candidate look like?’

Our programmes are very competitive, which means that we look closely at all aspects of an application, not just your academic record. While of course academic achievement is very important, and you must meet the academic entry requirements for the programme you are applying for, there are many other important aspects to the application.

At Imperial Business School, we are looking for well-rounded, motivated candidates who can bring more to the table than just a strong academic record. We want to see what differentiates you from the hundreds of other applicants who apply to our MSc programmes!

While work experience and internships that are directly relevant to the programme you are applying for can strengthen your application, do not underestimate the value of transferable skills. As many of our MSc programmes are designed for new and recent graduates, if you have minimal work experience, you will not be alone!

Think about where you may have picked up transferable skills that will benefit your MSc studies and future career. This is useful to start thinking about now as employers will also be looking for candidates who can bring more than just academics to their company. This will be the distinguishing factor between you and thousands of other similar people.

The vast majority of the successful ��ý who join our MSc programmes have done one or some of the following:

Have hobbies or interests outside of their academic lives. This could involve being an active member of a society at university (sports, dancing, cooking, drama… the list is endless!) or spending time volunteering or raising money for a cause that means a lot to them.

Have international experience. This could be through studying or living abroad for your entire university studies or as part of it. If you haven’t studied abroad, then it could be through volunteering, travel or other activities during your holidays.

Speak additional languages. For many of you, English is already an additional language and it isn’t uncommon for our ��ý to be fluent in four or five languages which can increase their employability. If English is your native and only language, do not worry – there’s lots of opportunities to learn or improve on your language skills whilst at Imperial both through formal classes and also peer to peer support from your class mates.

Have demonstrated positive impact or achievement. This could be through representing a region or country at sports, or something more altruistic such as mentoring young people to making changes to your university experiences through student leadership. We now offer a £20,000 Dean’s Impact scholarship for candidates who demonstrate impact and achievement in any of the following five key areas: Entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, sustainability, social impact and leadership, so this is certainly something that we are keen to hear about in your application and in the scholarship video assessment.

Have thought about their immediate career goals after graduating from their MSc. You will be entering a highly competitive recruitment market upon graduating and we want to see that you have already thought about the skills and experience you are going to need to succeed in your target organisation and role. If you are planning on setting up your own business, we want to see that you have thought about what expertise or product your business will deliver and that you have researched the market you wish to enter.

Most importantly, our ��ý are eager to share their experiences, support their colleagues, and teach as well as learn from their peers. This comes across in their applications, interviews, when they are here as ��ý and afterwards as part of our alumni network.

Sawan Oberai is studying MSc Economics & Strategy for Business; he shares his motivations for studying this programme at Imperial Business School. My name is Sawan Oberai and I’m from New Delhi, India. Some facts about me: I am passionate about are sustainability and climate change, commercial aviation, cooking, and I love dogs!

I studied economics at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, University of Delhi for my undergraduate. I am currently studying MSc Economics and Strategy for Business programme at Imperial Business School. The programme combines knowledge from economics and management, with technology to help ��ý leverage economic theory and apply it to real-life business problems. This is exactly what I wanted to study for my master’s!

Finding out I had been accepted at Imperial Business School

I was in my hometown (Delhi) when I received the most exhilarating piece of news: I had been accepted at Imperial Business School.

Before sleeping, I checked my phone to see if there were any updates; I saw an email from Imperial that had ‘Congratulations’ in its subject. When I opened the email, I was overwhelmed with joy as it was an acceptance email! I ran out of my room to the living room where my parents were while screaming at the top of my lungs. After receiving a scolding for scaring them (fairly), I told them the news and they had a similar reaction to mine. It was so fulfilling as Imperial Business School was my first choice.

Why I chose Imperial Business School

The combination of economics and management is very unique and hard to come across, but it was exactly what I wanted to do. To get to study my preferred combination at a Business School that trains you for the real world and is highly reputed was an opportunity I could not forego. Before applying, it felt like a far-reach to apply to Imperial but once I had the acceptance letter in front of me, it wasn’t a hard decision to make.

What it means to me to be studying at Imperial

The first month in London did not feel real. I was having trouble internalising the fact that I am actually studying at my top choice (Business School and programme) and global top 10 university.

For me, studying at Imperial Business School is all about grabbing all opportunities with both hands. The Business School is way more resourceful than I could have thought. While the academics are first-rate, the extracurricular and cocurricular opportunities are endless. I am proactive in participating in a variety of workshops, sessions, and career events, and also love visiting any markets or pop-ups at the university.

Studying at Imperial Business School is probably the best decision I have ever made.

How I am finding the programme so far

The programme is really intriguing and flexible. Not only are the core modules really interesting and practical but we also have diverse choices of electives.

I found the Corporate Strategy module to be my personal favourite so far; this all about a firm’s scope, determining which businesses and activities to include within the boundaries of the firm. The class isn’t really a lecture format but revolves around discussions. The assessment structure was also quite nice with us applying knowledge from our discussions and material to solve business problems. I am beyond excited to explore where the programme takes me.

What I am most looking forward to

I am excited to study the electives that I have selected as I have chosen sustainability-oriented modules (aligned with my interest area). Additionally, I am looking forward to undertaking the consulting project in the summer wherein real companies come to Imperial with real business problems. It feels surreal to get to solve actual business issues as part of the programme.

As part of applying to study an MSc or MBA programme at Imperial Business School, you will answer a series of career planning questions and upload your CV.

When reviewing an application, we consider all aspects, including professional experience (if any) and career planning; so, your careers questions answers and CV will highlight whether you have thought about how an MSc or MBA will support you in achieving your future career aspirations.

This post aims to provide you with details of five things you can do to strengthen the career planning and experience sections of your MSc or MBA application.

1. Plan your career by doing research and thinking about possible roles

In the application, you will be asked to identify the sector you are interested in and your ideal employer, role and country. Therefore, we strongly recommend thoroughly researching your career goals by looking at job specifications for potential roles and employers you may want to work for after completing your MSc or MBA. Such research will also help you to grasp a better understanding of the sector in which you want to work and ensure it’s an area you are really interested in!

As well as researching potential roles, you should also ensure you have a clear understanding of the programme you are applying to. We recommend you do this to ensure your career plan aligns to your chosen programme; a strong applicant will have a career aspiration which aligns to the content of the programme they are applying to.

We also consider it especially important for candidates to be focused on their career path early on in our application process because many employers open for applications to their graduate roles before our MSc programmes have even begun. We, therefore, want our ��ý to be in the best possible place, early on, to have the option to be considered for the roles these companies offer.

2. Answer the career planning section in detail

For this section of the application form, we ask you to think about your future career and ask you three questions.

How your chosen programme at the Business School will help you reach your career goal?
What barriers you may need to overcome to reach this goal?
What skills you will need to develop in order to prepare for this career?

We advise being as specific as possible in your answers, to demonstrate the research you have done into your chosen career and highlight to us how studying with us will help you obtain your target role. We also recommend the use of examples in your answers, we want to see how your chosen programme specifically will prepare you for your next career steps, and exactly what skills you identify as being important in your target role.

We strongly advise you don’t write one-line answers with no examples. We also recommend you don’t write about previous academic results or skills, as you should use this section to illuminate your more unique skills; we can read about your academic results elsewhere in your application, so you don’t need to repeat yourself here.

We appreciate that not everyone will be aiming to join a large multinational company and that some applicants may wish to work for a family business or small/medium-sized organisations. If you are planning to set up your own business you will need to outline what expertise, product, or service your business will deliver. You will also be expected to demonstrate a coherent understanding of the targeted market, as well as existing market competitors.

3. Give clear durations of the length(s) of your work experience and internships

Include specific dates, highlighting the exact duration of any internships or work experience you have completed. To ensure there is enough space on your CV to include relevant information, we also recommend only including work experience or extracurricular activities if less than three years old, or if relevant.

4. Use a clear CV format

We recommend using a template, which will make your CV clear and doesn’t contain too much text. You can download a CV template here or find a template online – there are lots of guides readily available. Use your CV to highlight any international study on your CV in the education section, and extracurricular experiences, as well as academic and professional experience.

Your CV should be ideally one side of A4 in length (at the very most two pages maximum) as this will help to keep your CV clear and easily readable. Keeping your CV shorter in length will also ensure you to include only the most important and relevant information.

5. Highlight the responsibilities you’ve had in internships and work experience

Following on from using a clear CV format, we also recommend ensuring that your CV has a clear description of duties. The strongest applicants will typically exhibit a clear description of duties which involve more complex tasks or responsibility – if you can illuminate the impact you have made or where you went beyond the norm then this is highly recommended. The strongest applicants will typically also have work experience which is highly relevant or transferrable to their target role – perhaps even with their target employer!
