Greater representation at senior levels is increasingly recognised as influencing how capital is allocated. </p> <p lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">Imperial Business School’s third annual Women in Finance event explored how women are influencing capital markets and redefining leadership across sustainable finance. </p> <h3 lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">An investment narrative that is rooted in embracing change </h3> <p lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">The keynote address was delivered by Hortense Bioy, former Head of Sustainable Investing Research at Morningstar Sustainalytics, who focused on building a more sustainable and inclusive financial future. She explored how geopolitical uncertainty has reshaped sustainable investing strategies, creating both complexity and opportunity. </p> <p lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">“The media often debates whether ESG is dead,” Bioy observed. “What we are witnessing right now is an evolution of practices, a recalibration by businesses and investors alike. She expressed optimism that as access to high-quality data improves, ESG – once perceived as a top-down imposition – is increasingly being integrated into portfolio construction and reporting. While AI and advanced technologies can enhance data analysis, she stressed that human judgement remains essential in translating information into meaningful insight.</p> <p lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">Kamini Banga, Chair of the Banga Family Trust, reflected on her experience working in India, where workplace equity was less established when she began her career. From identifying public healthcare investment needs in rural communities to overseeing family enterprise, she highlighted the importance of a just transition in emerging markets. </p> <p lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB" xml:lang="EN-GB">Zoe Jankel, Vice President and Senior Credit Officer at Moody’s Ratings, spoke about cultural change within organisations. She noted a shift away from expectations that women must conform to traditionally masculine leadership styles. Even before the programme officially began, many of us connected through Unibuddy. My Full-Time MBA cohort includes ý from a wide range of nationalities, industries and professional backgrounds, which has led to dynamic conversations and new ways of thinking.</span></p> <p><span>The collaborative spirit of the programme goes beyond the classroom too. In one professional development session, we were asked to present a goal and identify the types of people we needed to connect with in order to achieve it. I was touched by how quickly my classmates offered support; it was a clear indication of Imperial’s collaborative nature.</span></p> <p><span>This was further reinforced by networks like the Women in SET (Science, Engineering & Technology), which allows ý to connect with and advocate for women who have similar career ambitions in STEM. </span></p> <p><span>And the wider Imperial community – including peers from engineering, data science and AI – has offered further invaluable learning opportunities. These scholarships are awarded by the Academic Selection Committee based on all the information you submitted during the normal Master’s application process. I think I read the email three or four times to make sure it is a genuine email – that’s how much I could not believe the offer.  </p> <p>In my undergraduate studies and thereafter I never thought that I would qualify for any sort of aid and/or scholarships which is why I was so shocked initially. In the end, I am extremely thankful and proud of the award as it not only helped me financially but also introduced me to an entire new network of others scholarship holders from other programmes that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to. </p> <h2>My motivations for applying for this scholarship </h2> <p>As mentioned, Women in Finance scholarship does not require a separate application, but the admissions website encourages you to include any leadership experience or participation in diversity initiatives in your personal statement. The subject of diversity in the workplace and promoting female talent is very close to my heart so it was one of the points that I made in my application. However, I wasn’t sure whether I qualify for the scholarship so I wrote my application as normal and was not focussing specifically on any goal in mind other than securing a place on MSc Investment & Wealth Management programme.  </p> <h2>What this scholarship means to me </h2> <p>Everyone struggles with imposter syndrome be it at university or work including me. When I was applying, I knew that Imperial is a highly competitive university especially given the fact that it was my second time applying for the Master’s programme after being waitlisted for 2022 entry. Naturally, there were doubts in my head whether I would get in or whether I have enough to succeed in the programme. Being offered this scholarship was an eye-opening moment and it helped me gain confidence in my ability to succeed at Imperial and beyond. </p> <blockquote> <p>“I am extremely thankful and proud of the award as it not only helped me financially but also introduced me to an entire new network of others scholarship holders from other programmes that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to.” </p> </blockquote> <h2>My advice for prospective scholarship applicants </h2> <p>I would say the best piece of advice is to be yourself and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable in your application. The Academic Committee doesn’t only care about your grades or where you want to work after the programme, they want to see well rounded individuals. So, if there is a particular cause or issue that is close to you or there are any interesting extra-curricular activities or hobbies that you’ve done, don’t be afraid to talk about them and how they’ve helped you become the person that you are today. <h3>"Ambition” and “success” need redefining  </h3> <p>Women do not lack ambition, as the <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/women-in-the-workplace" target="_blank">2025 Women in the Workplace McKinsey & Company report</a> concludes. But there is a cost to success which has prompted many women to leave the workforce. Ambition is about growth and challenge; it's a personal driver which reflects our individuality. </p> <p>A recent <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2025/10/business/women-leaving-workforce-unemployment-vis/index.html" target="_blank">CNN Business report</a> found that almost half a million women had left their jobs in the US between January and October in 2025 for reasons ranging from poor work-life balance, the cost and challenges of accessing childcare and toxic workplace cultures.  </p> <p>These pressures reflect a deeper structural issue: many workplaces were not designed with diverse career paths or life circumstances in mind. </p> <p>As a result, many women are turning to entrepreneurship. Women are now starting nearly half of the businesses in the US, according to a recent article in Forbes magazine. A 2024 <a href="https://newsroom.wf.com/news-releases/news-details/2024/New-Report-Finds-Growth-of-Women-Business-Owners-Outpaces-the-Market/default.aspx" target="_blank">Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Business Report</a> cites the number of women-owned businesses increasing at nearly double the rate of male-owned businesses between 2019 and 2023. Choosing entrepreneurship doesn’t signal lower ambition. It often signals the opposite — ambition on one’s own terms. </p> <blockquote> <p>When organisations fail to support diverse forms of ambition, they risk losing talented employees. </p> </blockquote> <p></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div style="margin-top: 0rem; margin-bottom: 0rem; padding-top: 1rem; padding-bottom: 1rem;" class="paragraph paragraph--text paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--margin"> <div class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <h3>Why is this a business problem </h3> <p>The sheer volume of women leaving their jobs should serve as a wake-up call to business leaders. Many organisations are still largely run by men, and gender biases, both subtle and explicit, continue to shape workplace culture. When organisations fail to support diverse forms of ambition, they risk losing talented employees.  </p> <h3>How business leaders can redefine ambition and success </h3> <p>We need to make both cultural and organisational changes, with a long, hard look at what ambition and success should look like. Business leaders must redefine these constructs for the workforce and next generation: </p> <ul><li> <p>On the systems side, leaders must revisit hiring, promotion criteria, pay structures and performance evaluation. If we define ambition solely as vertical progression, we will continue to reproduce inequality and risk losing talented employees. </p> </li> </ul><ul><li> <p>On the cultural side, leaders must model sustainable success. That means realistic expectations, visible boundary-setting, and rejecting the idea that heroic sacrifice equals commitment. </p> </li> </ul><ul><li> <p>All leaders and team members should have the agency to challenge bias in their own teams. </p> </li> </ul><ul><li> <p>Conversations about equity of opportunity must start early, in classrooms and around dining tables, as we speak to young people about success. </p> </li> </ul><p>Before we question women’s ambition, we need to question the systems we’ve built. If the goal isn’t desirable, the cost is too high and the support isn’t there, disengagement cannot be named as a lack of ambition. It’s simply a rational response to inappropriately designed systems.  <br />  </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> incorporating equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy into organisations – and why it matters.  </h3> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--text paragraph--view-mode--default paragraph--margin"> <div class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <h4>How did you end up specialising in EDI? </h4> <p>I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire and everyone was white and Christian. But my family – immigrants who ate different foods, spoke another language, and felt deep ties to other parts of the world – was a bit different.  </p> <p>I was taught to value differences, to seek out people and experiences that would expose me to other cultures. I went to Wellesley College, one of the most diverse universities in the US, and my first boss was one of the first Black female professors at Harvard. With her, I studied post-apartheid South Africa and attempts to make business there more diverse.  </p> <h4>What are the challenges of teaching diversity in a university? </h4> <p>There are several challenges at play. We have ý from over 100 countries, with a range of social identities, values and life experiences.   </p> <p>Diversity, power and privilege are often debated in the media. Yet, the lived experience of being different to those with power, the prevalence of implicit bias, and the impact of systemic bias are supported by as robust social science as anything else we teach. We can debate how to solve these issues but not the facts. Shifting the mindset from seeing diversity related topics as opinion-based to science-based can be quite challenging. </p> <p>On top of this, there will always be people for whom the topic is abstract and others for whom it is their lived experience. While I want to give space to ý to discuss perspectives and opinions, I also need to maintain inclusive boundaries. </p> <h4>How do you believe EDI can strengthen businesses? </h4> <p>Diversity of people, of thought, of approach can be immensely valuable to organisations. If your business sees it as positive rather than potentially negative, the result is increased creativity, enthusiasm and passion. There is immense value that can be unlocked through a shift towards inclusion in mindset and culture. </p> <h4>What were you hoping to achieve with your award-winning “Working in Diverse Organisations” initiative? </h4> <p>The working world is incredibly diverse – and increasingly so. You're going to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds who have had very different life experiences and areas of expertise. </p> <p>Historically, the work of managing diversity has fallen to members of marginalised groups. They did this by altering themselves to fit in. Now, many workers feel comfortable being authentic in the workplace and, as a result, diversity in the workplace is more visible, and the work of managing it belongs to the group rather than individuals. </p> <p>We need a set of tools to navigate diverse environments. Our initial interpretation can be faulty because we’ve all internalised a way of understanding the world informed by stereotypes and biased representations. But we can learn to evaluate each other accurately and learn skills that enable us to listen to each other better, as well as to recognise that people can experience the same situation very differently. </p> <h4>What do you consider to be EDI priorities?  </h4> <p>There’s research that shows that raising children to see racial differences, as opposed to a colourblind approach, increases their ability to acknowledge racism and pick up on it in later life.  </p> <p>At the Business School, we've already done a lot of great things, and, to my knowledge, “Working in Diverse Organisations” is the only obligatory EDI programme at a business school – and that is significant. The goal is to create leaders who understand the power of inclusion and have the skills to create environments that unlock the value of diversity in our workforces. </p> <h4>What are the main challenges of incorporating EDI principles into business? </h4> <p>London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, but winning hearts and minds is still one of the main challenges. Research shows significant organisational change needs strong, visible support from the top.  The business world needs more senior leaders who are knowledgeable about inclusion and who are willing to make changes. </p> <p>We also need to trust our first reactions and judgments less. Our instincts can often lead us to make biased decisions, whether regarding people, risk management or financial decisions. We all need to learn to be led by data and evidence.  </p> <h4>Do you feel optimistic about the future of business? </h4> <p>Across the business world, things are very different compared to 20 years ago. I think things are improving and, hopefully, influencing a percentage of future business leaders to behave a little bit differently will have an impact. I feel so enthused and happy that I work somewhere that has given every student the opportunity to learn about diversity in the workplace. </p> <p>The level of passion I had when I started my career has only grown. It’s magnified by having a biracial child, and by interacting with ý who are refugees, or first-generation university ý, or who identify as LGTBQIA+. I’m reminded that the human cost of not figuring this out is immense, and I'm grateful and happy that I get to do the work.  </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field class="field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="text-formatted "> <p>Whether it’s understanding how a fiercely competitive airline sector can shake up a connected industry such as hospitality, or how foreign investment alters homegrown businesses, Professor Renáta Kosová’s research is <strong>grounded in the corporate world</strong>. She tackles how businesses fare amid rising and falling economic fortunes, market shocks and changing landscapes, and asks if there is an internal structure that helps them survive in the long run. </p> <p>In the decade she’s spent at Imperial Business School, Professor Kosová has investigated a wide variety of microeconomic questions, from the impact of a minimum wage on businesses’ performance to the corporate consequences of investor optimism during boom years. </p> <p>“My research focuses on <strong>how firms can boost their performance, grow and ultimately thrive in a global marketplace</strong>,” she says. Over her career, her focus has shifted from examining how <a href="/business-school/ib-knowledge/strategy-leadership/does-covid-19-really-mean-the-death-globalisation/">globalisation </a>affects the industrial landscape to the microeconomics affecting a company’s fortunes. </p> <h3>Visibility for female academics  </h3> <p>Her promotion in 2023 to Professor of Economics has inspired her and <strong>raised her visibility in the academic and business community</strong>. “There are not so many senior women within economics. [Promotion] allows you to become involved in leadership roles.” Since becoming a professor, she has taken on the role of College consul – these are academics within Imperial who help ensure academic integrity. “And of course, I’m motivated to continue my research.” </p> <p>Most recently, she’s looked at the impact of deregulation and increase in competition in the airline sector, and <a href="/business-school/ib-knowledge/finance/boom-and-gloom-what-hotels-can-teach-investors">what this does to the hotel trade</a>. And there are spillover benefits among certain strata of hotels, she found – similar to the spillover benefits experienced by domestic Czech firms after foreign funds flowed during the transition to a market economy. This was the subject of her dissertation written as part of her doctoral studies at the University of Michigan and motivated by economic events in her native Slovakia. </p> <blockquote> <p>Microeconomics gives you a valuable thinking structure – you know where to start looking for the beginning and end</p> </blockquote> <p>Much of her research uses detailed information from the hospitality sector. Hotels, with their varied ownership and clearly benchmarked signs of quality – from luxury through to economy – can help spot how investments made in boom time fare when the dust settles.      </p> <p>It’s going to be a busy year: she and a colleague are preparing a book looking at franchises, and she has ambitions to become more involved with the International Society of Franchising. She is also busy organising the second launch of the “Theory & Applications of Contracts” conference in cooperation with other colleagues from Imperial, Bristol and the Nobel Prize winner Professor Sir Oliver Hart from Harvard.  </p> <h3>Research with impact </h3> <p>Professor Kosová is also enthusiastic about sharing insights from her research with the Business School’s ý. “I’m very happy I can teach and incorporate my research to demonstrate the real world beyond abstract principles.”  </p> <p>A knowledge of microeconomics <strong>gives ý the tools to understand forces behind supply and demand</strong>, for example, and the impacts upon companies’ performance, she says. “It’s about what managers do, what entrepreneurs do, and what individuals do. Understanding causality and incentives in economics is one of the most important things. Microeconomics gives you a valuable thinking structure – you know where to start looking for the beginning and end.” </p> <p>And her future research agenda is crowded. One project draws insights from recent corporate failures within the UK’s fintech market, <strong>examining the fragility of trust among investors who have suffered losses</strong>. “These results are important for the individual but also for the firm’s performance.” An earlier collaboration with Imperial’s Engineering department has also raised the hopes of investigating the potential impact of automation and robotics in the hospitality sector. </p> <p>“With promotion comes more demands but I’m happy because I think it’s about giving back – to the academic field, to Imperial and to
