We believe that a Master’s degree at Imperial Business School should be flexible, enriching and a chance for ��ý to immerse themselves in environments that they might not otherwise have access to. That is why we offer the Extended Term as an option, allowing ��ý to extend their programme duration to 16 months to commit to a longer Work Placement or Global Exchange.

For Frank Yang, a recent MSc in Management (MiM)* graduate, the Extended Global Exchange was the perfect opportunity to explore technical business roles, deepen his knowledge and immerse himself fully in a new academic and cultural environment.

Completing a full term at one of our partner institutions in Madrid, Frank was able to immerse himself more intentionally in this global learning environment, creating a richer, more transformative Master’s experience. He completed his Master’s at Imperial feeling confident and equipped with the knowledge to tackle tech-oriented business roles. In the below blog, Frank shares his experience on the exchange in his own words.

Pivoting careers through Imperial

I initially moved to London for my undergraduate degree in Educational Psychology at 18. As I progressed through my studies, I realised that I wanted to pivot into the technology sector and take on some more tech-heavy business roles. This is what drew me to Imperial’s MSc in Management (MiM) programme for my Master’s studies. The cutting-edge ecosystem and strong reputation in STEM-related disciplines felt like the ideal environment to support this transition.

Supporting my career goals with global opportunities

From the very start of my Master’s, it became clear that there were numerous ways that I could tailor my learning to suit my career goals. During Induction Week, the Extended Term, and specifically the Extended Global Exchange, was highlighted during a conversation with the Global Student Life Manager. Having lived in Beijing, Singapore and London, this immersive experience presented a chance for me to expand my horizons further.

Practically, the Extended Term advanced my graduation timeline, enabling me to access a broader pool of internship opportunities for my Work Placement. I leveraged this opportunity to try out more technical business roles, allowing me to test and refine my career assumptions as someone seeking to pivot between fields.

Researching partner institutions

After expressing my interest in the Extended Global Exchange, the Business School provided a well-structured website with detailed information on each partner institution, including brochures and contact points. This gave me a comprehensive overview of the available opportunities and helped me shortlist potential destinations early on.

The exchange team also maintained an open-door policy. Booking calls was extremely straightforward and staff were consistently responsive and transparent. Any unanswered questions, such as exchange timing details, were clarified as soon as confirmed information became available. This allowed me to evaluate my top choices thoroughly and with confidence.

Choosing IE Business School in Madrid

Specifically, I chose to undertake the exchange at Imperial’s partner institution, IE Business School. There were several reasons why I chose this institution, including its beautiful Madrid location, its growing reputation in digital innovation, finance and entrepreneurship, and its focus on highly applied pedagogy, which is a personal interest of mine after studying education. Having also studied Spanish since middle school, it’s long been a wish of mine to live in Spain, so I had to go for it.

The most decisive step was a call organised with the Global Exchange staff at IE Business School. The session provided clarity on academic structure, course delivery and student life. The insights shared during that conversation ultimately confirmed that it was the right fit for me.

Applying MSc in Management (MiM) learnings to a new academic environment

From the outset, my studies on the MSc in Management (MiM) programme set me up for success on the exchange. As a highly international cohort, I worked in diverse teams at Imperial, which trained me to communicate effectively across cultures and different working styles. Being able to navigate multicultural environments was invaluable at IE Business School, where classrooms were similarly global and collaborative.

Academically, the technical grounding and applied problem solving on my programme translated directly to the classroom environment at IE Business School. Concepts and approaches developed during Imperial’s Marketing Analytics elective gave me the confidence to contribute meaningfully to IE’s FinTech module, especially around applying machine learning algorithms to emerging financial technologies. Bringing this knowledge into group work at IE Business School sparked engaging in-class discussions and added depth to our projects.

Together with my Imperial classmate, Umang, who was also on the exchange at IE, we achieved the top score in the class.

Representing Imperial in a global competition

A personal highlight for me was attending the Tech Venture Bootcamp by the IE School of Science and Technology, a university-wide start-up competition. We formed teams on the spot, defined users and pain points, devised business strategies, developed a technical product and pitched in 10 days. I joined the team as the developer, as I wanted to try something new, and learnt how to build a full data engineering pipeline. This was the perfect learning opportunity to extend the skills I had developed at the Business School.

While we did not win the grand prize, we were a finalist for the Sustainability Award out of 20 teams. I made great friends that I keep in touch with, and with sharp contributions, I hope we represented Imperial in a positive manner.

Academic and cultural growth in Madrid

Beyond the curriculum, the exchange offered moments that challenged how I learn and engage. One standout moment was when a senior leader from McKinsey & Company came to deliver a guest lecture. Through clarity and presence, he demonstrated what elite communication at the highest level looks like during a live Q&A.

Living and studying in Madrid for an extended period also pushed me to adapt culturally. I joined a mixed martial arts gym in the local community with my course mate and regularly took the opportunity to develop my conversational Spanish skills.

The benefits of an Extended Global Exchange from my experience

For me, the defining feature of this initiative was its duration. Studying for a full academic term allows ��ý to move beyond the novelty and tourist phase and genuinely experience daily life in another country. It creates the space to establish important routines, build deeper friendships and engage meaningfully in academics.

Whilst short-term exchanges compress the experience into a tight window, a full-term exchange offered me a chance to find a more balanced rhythm. I was able to focus on my learning, whilst also integrating into everyday life in Madrid. My experience wasn’t a rushed one, but a chance to intentionally live an international study experience.

As a result, it has significantly enhanced both the value and enjoyment of my Master’s experience. Not only was I able to fulfil my dream of living in Spain whilst continuing to develop specialised knowledge in finance and technology but also see how the knowledge built on the MSc in Management (MiM) programme can be applied to a global learning environment.

Enhancing my CV with the Extended Global Exchange

The exchange expanded both my technical exposure and project portfolio. The Imperial ecosystem is rife with opportunities, so by extending my studies with the Global Exchange, it meant that I had more time to dive deeper into my areas of interest.

As a result, I now have tangible technical projects that demonstrate my ability to operate at the intersection of technology and business. In addition, developing conversational Spanish strengthens my international profile and supports long-term global mobility.

Together, the Extended Global Exchange enhances both the depth and breadth of my CV, complementing the strong analytical foundation developed during my studies at the Business School.

Going forward, I plan on exploring tech-oriented business roles such as AI transformation or product management, utilising everything I’ve learnt across both Imperial and IE.

Why you should consider an Extended Global Exchange

This is almost a risk-free opportunity to explore somewhere new in a fully immersive manner. You should definitely consider an Extended Global Exchange if you are:

Naturally curious and open to new environments
Willing to step outside of your familiar routines
Intentional about immersing yourself in the local culture.

Approaching the exchange with openness and flexibility will lead to both a rewarding academic experience and a fulfilling personal one.

Imperial Business School did an all-around brilliant job in making the whole experience extremely smooth and enjoyable, including helping to make visa arrangements. To be extremely frank (no pun intended), this was a top highlight of my life thus far … life is short - say yes when you can.

This September, we were thrilled to welcome five new cohorts to Imperial Business School. Each student brings with them a wealth of unique experiences that promises to enrich their learning environment. MSc Strategic Marketing (on campus, full-time)

Our MSc Strategic Marketing (on-campus, full-time) combines in-depth theory with practical, real-world insights and the latest in technology and innovation. This programme explores the fundamentals of marketing and combines it with data-driven decision-making for business.

Students on this programme will have access to world-class marketing faculty and will gain the strategic skills needed to create impactful marketing campaigns and navigate global markets with confidence. Upon graduation, ��ý will have the knowledge to work in a variety of sectors and have the skills needed to drive business growth.

The MSc Strategic Marketing (on-campus, full-time) programme consists of 315 ��ý who represent 53 nationalities from across the globe. Our ��ý come from a range of degree backgrounds, including Business / Management (59%), Arts / Humanities (22%), Economics (7%) and Science / Medicine / Maths (5%).

The curriculum of Imperial's MSc Strategic Marketing programme is a perfect fit for my career aspirations. Having worked in the marketing industry since 2020, I have a solid foundation in marketing communications and am eager to develop my technical skills. The programme's focus on data-driven marketing, critical thinking and problem-solving will equip me with the tools I need to succeed in today's competitive landscape.

I am particularly excited about the opportunity to learn from renowned faculty with expansive teaching and practice experience, to refine my skills and network with industry leaders.

How have you got involved in the Imperial community so far?

I am currently the Vice President of the Social Impact & Responsible Businesses club. I am passionate about making a positive impact on society and am excited to work with my team to organise events and initiatives that promote sustainability and social responsibility.

Imperial Business School also offers countless networking opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. Being part of a diverse cohort of over 50 countries has meant that networking never stops and this has allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life.

During our Induction Week, we spent a day outdoors working in teams, doing puzzles, playing games and getting to know each other. It was a fun and memorable experience that helped me bond with my classmates and learn more about their backgrounds and interests. I played laser tag for the first time and ‘attempted’ the climbing activity. Attempted because I pleaded to be brought down almost immediately.

What networking opportunities have you had since starting your programme?

The programme has already provided several networking opportunities in the first few months, including industry leader presentations and alumni events. These have been invaluable for gaining insights from successful entrepreneurs and marketing professionals. Additionally, being part of such a diverse class offers the chance to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

How is Imperial helping you to achieve your career goals?

I chose Imperial’s MSc Strategic Marketing (on-campus, full-time) because of its strong reputation and its practical, data-driven approach. The programme’s digital marketing and entrepreneurial modules align perfectly with my goal of starting my own business that uses strategic marketing principles to disrupt traditional industries.

Delivered one-hundred-percent online via our virtual learning platform, The Hub, MSc Strategic Marketing (online, part-time) is perfect for those who are wishing to accelerate their careers without pausing their work, blending academic study with real-world application. It is designed for ambitious marketing professionals who are ready to take their marketing expertise to the next level.

Through a mix of core modules and a wide range of optional elective modules, ��ý will gain a grounding in key marketing areas and have the chance to shape the programme to suit their career ambitions.

This year, we’re welcoming 59 ��ý who are joining us from across the globe, representing 38 different nationalities. 75% of the cohort are female and many of our ��ý will be continuing to work whilst studying.

Why did you choose to study MSc Strategic Marketing (online, part-time) at Imperial Business School? 

My desire to study at Imperial Business School came from a craving to learn everything I can about marketing and I believe that there is no better place to do so than here. Imperial's MSc Strategic Marketing (online, part-time) perfectly blends fundamental marketing theories with innovative research.

I was also impressed by Imperial’s world-renowned reputation and, of course, the programme’s flexibility, which enables me to study alongside my full-time job. The opportunity to work and study simultaneously enables me to apply my learnings directly to my job, which is very rewarding.

What was the highlight of coming on campus for the Induction Week?

Induction Week was the perfect opportunity to get to know my future classmates, who had travelled from all corners of the world to be there. When I decided to go back to university after working for a decade in the industry, I knew there were three main things I needed:

MSc Economics & Strategy for Business

The MSc Economics & Strategy for Business offers a unique blend of economics, strategic business insights and practical experience, preparing ��ý to tackle the complex challenges of the business world. Students gain hands-on experience through case studies, group projects and consultancy opportunities, while simultaneously developing strategic leadership skills. The programme blends industry insights with economic theory and real-world business strategy to create a highly employable graduate at the conclusion of the programme.

This year, we’re welcoming 176 ��ý, 51% of which are female ��ý. Our diverse and dynamic cohort represent 44 different nationalities from all around the world, and have degree backgrounds in various different areas, including Business / Management (29%), Economics (42%), Finance / Accounting (17%), Engineering / Technology (4%), and Arts / Humanities (6%).

How does the curriculum align with your career goals?

As an aspiring policy analyst aiming to contribute to initiatives by global organisations like the United Nations, I am passionate about addressing issues such as education inequality and international trade disputes. Elective modules like Geopolitics, Economics of Healthcare and Public Policy, and Co-creating Innovation with AI and Robots align perfectly with my aspirations and current global trends. In today's VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world, rapidly evolving technology is increasingly integral to business. Through case studies, group projects and real-world scenarios, we continually explore the dynamic relationship between technology and business.

What networking opportunities have you had since starting the programme?

What attracted me most were the opportunities to grow personally and professionally, the chance to engage with brilliant minds and the vibrant community of clubs and societies. Networking at Imperial starts the moment you receive an offer.

What’s unique is how interconnected the Imperial community is, allowing me to connect not only with my cohort but also with ��ý and professionals from other departments. As part of the Student Ambassador programme and the Dean’s Student Advisory Council as Vice President of Wellbeing, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with prospective ��ý and industry leaders worldwide.

MSc Management and MSc International Management

As aforementioned, in 2025 the strengths of our MSc Management and MSc International Management will be combined into one innovative programme, MSc in Management (MiM).

With a focus on personalised learning, leadership development and global exposure, our programme offers a comprehensive approach to mastering the complexities of modern business. Students can tailor their learning journey through a diverse range of electives, build leadership skills through hands-on projects, and gain invaluable career guidance to help them reach their aspirations.

The 2024 MSc International Management programme is a cohort of 73 ��ý, representing 25 nationalities. 45% are female ��ý and they bring with them a range of experience from their degrees, including knowledge in business, finance, economics, engineering and the arts.

There are 189 ��ý studying on MSc Management this year, 54% of which are female and representing 38 different nationalities. Amongst others, ��ý have previously undertaken degrees across Arts / Humanities (48%), Economics (7%) and Engineering / Technology (39%) subjects.

Why did you choose to study MSc International Management at Imperial Business School?

There are several reasons why I chose to study MSc International Management at Imperial Business School. First, the location provides me with a wealth of opportunities. London is a big city that offers a chance for career growth, whilst also being a hub for entertainment at the same time. The programme also aligns with my career goal of working in the consulting sector. The diversity of the cohort also reflects my own multicultural background, having grown up in both China and Germany myself.

What networking opportunities are available to ��ý at the Business School?

Imperial Business School hosts many events that offer you a chance to network. The Welcome Day we had this year at the Science Museum event is a great example, as it brings together ��ý from other cohorts and gives you a chance to interact.

On my programme we also work in pre-determined and highly diverse groups, which pushes me to step out of my comfort zone and interact with different people from different professional and educational backgrounds.

Peter Holmes

MSc Management

Undergraduate education: English Literature, The University of Edinburgh

Why did you choose to study MSc Management at Imperial Business School?

Like many others, I entered university unsure of what I wanted to do after graduation. As a result, I chose to study what I enjoyed most at the time, which was English Literature.

Afterward, I completed some internships but still felt the need to develop the fundamental skills required to excel in a business setting, which led me to apply to Imperial.

The programme structure particularly appealed to me, as it exposes you to a broad range of business functions such as finance, strategy and marketing. While this is common in many MiM programmes, what sets Imperial apart is its flexibility: you can choose electives that best suit your interests or specialise in a particular sector.

How does the curriculum align with your career goals?

Before my Master’s, I struggled with the knowledge and confidence to answer technical interview questions. The programme has addressed this in just a few months. The modules encourage a new approach to business challenges, and by gaining a solid understanding of strategy, accounting, and operations, I feel more confident for interviews and ready to start work after graduation.

Imperial’s Careers resources are also extensive. Before arriving on campus, I had access to the Careers team and booked a 1-2-1 session in the summer to discuss my goals. As a student, I have unlimited access to services like CV reviews, mock interviews, case preparation and group tasks.

How does it feel to be studying in London, what do you look forward to exploring the most?

Growing up in Kent, I was on the edge of London, visiting occasionally. Now, there’s always something to do, and I’m closer to the Emirates, which is a bonus. The campus is ideally located next to Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Science and Natural History Museums. I look forward to exploring museums (most of which are free) and hopefully catching a few Arsenal games.

Aisha Qadi

MSc Management

Nationality: Saudi Arabian
Undergraduate education: Psychology, Queen Mary University London

What are your career goals and how do you plan on achieving them?

I’ve developed a strong interest in organisational behaviour, which blends perfectly with my background in psychology and management. After completing my Master’s, I’d love to pursue a PhD to explore this area more deeply and potentially work in HR, people consulting, or governance and policy. With past experience in these fields, I’m keen to take my knowledge further and create a positive impact.

Additionally, as a makeup artist and colour consultant, I’d love to grow my small business and expand my portfolio within the Beauty industry. This is something I’ve always been passionate about and excited to pursue alongside my career.

What networking opportunities have been available since you started your programme?

Networking is a vital skill in business, especially for effective stakeholder engagement. Since joining the programme, I’ve attended various networking events, from Welcome Day to Careers Fairs and social gatherings. Each event has given me valuable opportunities to connect and further refine my networking skills.

While I’ve gained a lot of experience with public speaking and networking through previous roles, including my time as a former SU sabbatical officer, I still see networking as an area for continuous growth. My advice is to seize every networking opportunity, whether you're new or experienced. Stepping out of your comfort zone helps you meet new people, share ambitions and learn something new each day.

What activities / clubs have you joined to help complement your studies?

Outside of academics, I enjoy walking around central London and weightlifting at the gym. I also love having coffee while catching up with friends or simply enjoying it during my walks.

I may be biased, but I highly recommend joining societies! During my undergraduate studies, I was actively involved in several societies and served on multiple committees, including as President. The people I met through those societies became my closest friends. After attending both the SU societies fair and the Business School Careers clubs fair, I’ve found a few I’m eager to join and look forward to getting involved again.

I have an insatiable appetite for all things business, economics, finance, and politics. The way these subjects influence the human mind and shape our world is what truly fascinates me. Hence, why the MSc Economics & Strategy for Business programme at Imperial Business School has been the ideal environment for me to explore and flourish within this dynamic business landscape.

The Imperial choice

Picture this – the heart of London, a stellar alumni board, an outstanding faculty, and a curriculum that’s as dynamic as the city itself. Imperial Business School was a no-brainer for me. Being in London is like being at the epi-centre of the business universe, and I wanted a front-row seat to witness and learn from the best.

The joy of intellectual stimulation

Fast forward to the present, my experience has been nothing short of exhilarating. The programme has managed to strike a balance between being interesting and intellectually stimulating. We aren’t just ��ý; we're future CEOs and board members in the making.

One highlight of last term was our Corporate Strategy elective. Instead of traditional textbook learning, we were thrown into the deep end with a real-world challenge. My team took on the mighty Netflix, dissecting its decision to dive headfirst into the streaming arena. This exercise opened our eyes to all types of considerations that companies face when making strategic decisions.

Nurturing future leaders

I've had the chance to hone my leadership skills by taking on the role of Student-Staff Committee (SSC) and actively participating in various clubs and competitions. It's a holistic approach to leadership development that goes beyond the confines of a classroom.

Eager anticipation for electives

The programme offers a fantastic array of electives, and I’m eagerly counting down the days until I can delve into the world of geopolitics. The anticipation of interacting with a diverse cohort and exploring these specialised subjects is thrilling.

Where technology meets business

Innovating and applying technological solutions are an integral part of the programme. Learning coding skills in the first semester was an eye-opener, as it highlighted the essential role that technology plays in today's business landscape. Whether analysing case studies or real-world scenarios, we consistently explored the dynamic relationship between technology and business.

Imperial’s MSc Economics & Business Strategy programme is not just an academic pursuit; it's a transformative journey. It's about gaining insights, refining leadership skills, and embracing the dynamic intersection of technology and business.

As I begin to navigate through this academic journey, I can't help but feel like I'm not just learning about the world; I'm actively shaping its future. I am excited by the adventures that lie ahead and the invaluable lessons to be learned on this programme in the bustling heart of London!
